A Look Inside Anxiety & Panic Disorder - Working with Facets

By: Elizabeth Bohorquez, RN, C.Ht

The multiple facets of anxiety & panic disorder live on a spectrum. There are times when some of the facets they are worse and other times when they seem better due to the circumstances that drive them, such as work, family, stress levels and other variables...Elizabeth Bohorquez, RN, C.Ht.

The multiple facets of anxiety & panic disorder are connected to how we manage our lifestyle behaviors, as well as the behavioral & coping patterns we have developed since childhood. If you want to get better, awareness is key. You must get to know your own facets. You must also learn what needs to be changed in your daily behaviors in order to keep stress levels low. As you read my articles you will find quite a bit of focus on stress management, especially food stress. This is type of stress tends to go unnoticed & it is very connected to anxiety & panic disorder symptoms.

Once my children were born, like many other parents, I made certain that healthy foods went on the table when we were all together, but when alone it was a different story. The bottom line is that stress must be released and if the addiction or binge is the mechanism, then the mind will find the place on the spectrum. Some people binge coming home from work or purposely wake up in the night to meet their needs. Others have secret hiding places, or times when no one is looking. Keeping it private or secret is part of the release mechanism. Bingeing and disorderly eating are probably the most personal of all the disorders. Bingeing is not just about food. It can be about other things, including shopping, gambling and other releases. Some people computer-binge or have television binge issues.

We all pay a price for our lost years. Some pay in lost health, present and future. Others pay through lost or damaged relationships with a significant other or even children. Others pay through lost opportunities in the workplace, finances, prosperity or in what could have been. Some pay the biggest price by losing themselves completely. I meet these people in my office every day and it is truly becoming an epidemic..

However, it is possible to turn away from the doors of disease and disordered living. What it takes is knowing exactly what to do and having a very hot desire to accomplish this. There must be a serious resolve to be willing to pay the piper, to be willing to experience temporary setbacks, and the resilience to get back on course with even more resilience than before the setback. In other words, to be energized by the actual setback. In a nutshell, those who do the correct things and persist will win, and while the things you need to do are not difficult, they demand commitment, and that very hot desire.

Heightened awareness of the many parts of your self is key to recovery and staying on course. There is much to learn and much to apply. This is not a journey for wimps and if you sense yourself as one, decide right now to give up that idea of yourself. That is not and will never be a winning mindset.. You will need to construct a new self-image and you will do so right here, through these very pages.. You are going to learn hundreds of things about yourself. Some you will like and want to keep. Others you will not want and so you don’t have to keep them. This is rather like house cleaning.

For example, an important thing I learned about myself was that I was not a 24-7 binge person. That may sound ridiculous, but it isn’t. It’s actually quite powerful to know that one has periods of time when not engaged in one’s problems. As I began to settle down about my bingeing and self-perception, I was able to disassociate from it, freeing myself to learn more and how I wanted to manage it. This had to be my choice, once again, bringing me to the point of power.. After awhile, the binge behavior became it’s own therapeutic self. This is detective work and I hope most of you enjoy a good mystery movie or book. In this instance, the binge is the mystery, holding the clues, as well as the answers.

Everyone who reads this book comes from a different direction, for we are all individuals. However, we have the binge and other disorderly living issues in common. Some of you may be reading with some trepidation. I know you have desire because you are reading this, but most likely you have failed before. Life myself, you may have blamed this failure on many things, both inside and outside of yourself. Do know that all things are inside, even if they appear to be outside. Perhaps you are frightened, not only of inviting another failure, but of what you may find out about yourself and how difficult it will be to face your truths. Do know that most truths tend lose their mysterious fear factor once they hit the light. If you are working with a therapist, you might like to bring this to your counseling sessions. While there is no need to have a therapist to do this self-development work, if you find areas that are simply too painful, perhaps you might like to schedule an appointment with someone you trust.

I suggest you work with a journal as you make your way through this book. Choose one that is dedicated to this work. Keep it in a place that is private, for your eyes only. This will encourage your own subconscious librarian to share some deeper insights with you. It is usually best to keep this inner work to oneself. Others will come to notice your progress. They may not know exactly what changed or is changing, but it will be notice. Simply smile and accept the compliments. Soon there will be more. Perhaps after awhile, when you have settled into the steps of this program and are on more solid footing, you might decide to share certain things. By that time you will be able to make better judgments about what to keep to yourself.

The desire to rehabilitate your self can be very powerful and can open doors to areas of creativity that were always there, but simply sleeping. Calls to self-rehabilitate can come from health concerns, lack of focus, relationship problems, work issues and a host of other areas. As you look deeper into the reasons for the wake-up call, no doubt you will find a host of things, including bingeing, addictions or disorderly patterns that may even appear normal because they have been residing with you for so long. More than likely you will locate other unhealthy lifestyle behaviors, perhaps emotional upheavals in particular areas of life or even life in general. Finally understanding that what you are doing isn't working and something has to change is actually a big gift, even though it may be wrapped in frightening paper.

Being overwhelmed is a common fear that appears in this moment of awakening. It's rather like a big plate of pasta. However, when someone is faced with a plate of real pasta, there is little tendency to procrastinate for long. One just digs in and usually doesn't stop until the plate is empty.. However, when life is seen as one big plate full of strands, its more common to freeze in fear and then stay locked up in procrastination which is simply another kind of fear. Unfortunately, a large percentage of our population, adults and children alike, live in this scary place. It's good to know that it is possible to break free of this paralyzing fear-state and as you travel through the pages of this book, you will learn to do that and much more. Do know that you are the writer, director and producer of your life and it's time to re-write a few things.
