A Look Inside Sugar Addiction - TMJ & Teeth Grinding = Pain

By: Elizabeth Bohorquez, RN, C.Ht

A large majority of people who find their way to my office or seminars suffer from TMJ, bruxism or headaches. It’s possible that they have suffered with this for years, if not decades. What amazes me is that there was never any consideration as to their nutritional intake as a form of food stress. In fact, when I mention food stress, I’m usually greeted with a blank look.

There are many individuals who grind their teeth at night, and even during the day. If you sat down and assessed these people, you would no doubt find the nutritional imbalance and the sugar. They are in the same boat with those mentioned above. It’s always important to have a look at the family and personal medical history, but also at the stress management area. Few of us were ever taught how to manage stress and it’s facets. It’s not uncommon to carry lots of tension in the head and neck. But, as you learn to communicate with all parts of your body, you will find stress triggers in just about every part. The body is connected through different systems, and while certain parts are the designated screamers, the stress certainly sits in each and every cell area.

It’s not uncommon to hear people talking about stress as "an issue" in their lives. There is a difference between outer stress and inner stress. I like to use the image of a baseball team. You are the batter and out on the mound is the stress-pitcher. There are baskets of stress balls, all labeled with the "issues." These are outer stressors, many of which are completely out of your control. However, remember that you are the batter and how you respond to the ball is within your control. When playing baseball it is vital to know about the bases.

First base is high level nutrition. Of course sugar and other chemicals make inner stress worse, and therefore your ability to respond well to the outer stress-balls. Second base is body communication management. You need to be practicing the skill of mental biofeedback and interactive awareness skills that are presented in a later chapters. On third base you will get to manage his emotions and their crayons. This is key to high level inner stress management. Once these three bases are in order, you are ready to score. You will be in position to design and reach your goals without being blocked by teeth grinding or other cell complaints.
