Alternate Sources of Income for Physicans

By: Saralyn Ready

Many physicians worldwide are already involved in providing Wellness and Weight Management services. In addition to providing your patient with a solution to “I am so fat”, “I am so tired”, a focus on Wellness offers physicians an opportunity to create a business that can earn immediate income and develop residual income. Surprisingly, this does not require a large investment of time or money. Incorporating an extensive line of quality, health-related natural products either on site, off-site, or online will greatly enhance the value you bring to your patients.

Per the published economists, Weight Management and disease prevention (Wellness) in the United States is a 30 billion-dollar per year industry, and growing. It is expected to hit the One Trillion dollar level by 2012. How does this impact the health care delivery paradigm? Identification of patient risk factors and obesity is now the vanguard of medical focus. Obesity is a medical condition, which must be treated. Traditional solutions are no longer viable. Patients are seeking long term solutions via programs that are both affordable and easy to incorporate into busy lifestyles.

Align yourself with a time-tested organization that is well-known, has an excellent track record, and that will support you with science-based research and products that are safe and that work. You can delegate the details to a staff member or an independent trained “wellness coach” so that your patients enjoy on-going support, motivation, and problem resolution. Those to whom you delegate should be focused on the results, not the product sales. That will better ensure satisfied patients who will be more likely to refer “Wellness” clients to your practice. “Wellness” clients will require little of your personal time and will benefit from the programs and products you offer.

As a marketing tool, implementation of a Wellness and Nutrition program will

* Enhance patient results
* Improve patient retention
* Increase patient referrals
* Amplify the quality and depth of a practice
* Market new services to inactive patients

Wellness and Weight Management Programs are a perfect complement to your existing practice. Provide the products your patients want while creating a profit center in your office.

If you feel uncomfortable imagining “selling” products, remember your patients are buying Nutrition and Nutritional Supplements anyway. The difference in buying from you is that they will be receiving quality products that they actually need, rather than “who knows what ingredients are in here” products they see on TV or hear about on the radio. They will be offered a personalized program tailored to their particular needs and adjusted as their situation changes. You will be in a position to see that they receive proper follow up and program modifications as needed. If they buy their products from just about anyone else, there will be no follow up dedicated to ensuring that they are using their products, taking them correctly, and getting results. Therefore, you will provide a unique and valuable service. Many specialties have been selling products as part of their service for years. Ophthalmologists sell eyewear and related items. Dermatologists sell skin care. Orthopedics sell crutches, walkers, ace bandages etc. Many pediatricians, obstetricians, and geriatric specialists sell nutritional products as a convenience to their patients. Your making it convenient and simple for your patients to get started on their programs is of great value and will be appreciated.

For out of the box thinkers this is exciting. For traditional thinkers perhaps this is a bit “over the top”. However, there is very little difference between this shift then when we switched from 8 track to cassette to CD’s to hear our favorite music.

We are all a part of the Wellness Revolution. Each person is either making the demand or meeting the demand.
