Ampicillin Medicine - Uses, Dosage and Side Effects

Ampicillin is an antibiotic belongs to the class of drugs known as penicillins. Ampicillin is used to treat certain infections that may be caused by bacteria such as pneumonia; bronchitis; and ear, lung, skin, and urinary tract infections.

Ampicillin Dosage

*For the treatment of Urinary, or Gastrointestinal Tracts, the usual starting dose is 500 milligrams, and you should be taken every 6 hours.
*Children weighing 44 pounds or less should have their dosage determined by their weight.
*Use entire prescription as directed, even if feeling better.

Uses of Ampicillin

*Ampicillin is used to treat various type of bacterial infections,such as middle ear infections and infections of the respiratory, urinary, and gastrointestinal tracts.
*It may also be used to treats other medical conditions those are listed in this medication guide.

Side Effects of Ampicillin

Before taken Ampicillin medicine, you should discuss the side effects with your doctor. If any develop or change in intensity, then you should inform your doctor as soon as possible. Because only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Ampicillin. Side effects may include:

*Colitis
*Diarrhea
*Fever
*Itching
*Nausea
*Rash or other skin problems
*Sore tongue or mouth
*Vomiting

Warnings and precautions before taking Ampicillin:

*If you have an allergic reaction, then you should stop taking Ampicillin and contact your doctor immediately.
*If you are taking this medicine, then it may causes diarrhea. So check with your doctor before taking any diarrhea remedy.
*After taken this medicine, then you may feel dizzy, or drowsiness. So you should not participate in any activities that require alertness such as driving and operate machinery.
*Ampicillin is in the FDA pregnancy category B. This means that it is unlikely to harm an unborn baby. Ampicillin is generally considered to be safe for use during pregnancy. Do not, however, take this medication without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant.
*Store the tablets and capsules at room temperature and store the suspension in the refrigerator for longer use. The suspension is good for 7 days at room temperature and for 14 days if it is stored in the refrigerator. Throw away any unused liquid after this amount of time.
*Talk with healthcare provider before starting any new medicine, including over-the-counter or natural products (herbs, vitamins).

Drug Interaction :-

If you are taking Ampicillin with certain other drugs, then the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. So it is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Ampicillin with the following:

*Allopurinol (Zyloprim)
*Atenolol (Tenormin)
*Chloroquine (Aralen)
*Mefloquine (Lariam)
*Oral contraceptives

Overdose

No specific symptoms have been reported. But after taken Ampicillin if you feel that overdose is suspected, then you should contact with your doctor immediately. Because it may lead to another serious effect.
