Androgel Medicine - Uses, Dosage and Side Effects

Testosterone is a naturally occurring male hormone and it is necessary for many processes in the body. It is a hormone replacement product for men that are suffering from hypogonadism, a low level of the male hormone testosterone. The active ingredient in AndroGel is testosterone. It is the same type of testosterone that is produced in the body. AndroGel is absorbed through the skin and can cause symptoms of male features in a woman who comes into contact with the medication.

Androgel Dosage

The recommended adult male starting dose of AndroGel is one 5-gram packet (or for Testim, one 5-gram tube) applied once daily, which delivers 50 milligrams of testosterone. Your doctor should take a blood test to measure your testosterone level about 2 weeks after you start treatment, and may adjust the dose accordingly. The maximum recommended dose is 2 packets or tubes daily.

Uses of Androgel

AndroGel is used to treat conditions in men that result from a lack of natural testosterone.

Side Effects of Androgel

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, inform your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue using topical AndroGel. Before taken Androgel medicine, you should discuss the side effects with your doctor

Stop using AndroGel and call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects:

* burn-like blistering of the skin where the transdermal patch is worn;
* skin irritation with patch-wearing that does not get better with time;
* problems with urination;
* swelling of your ankles;
* frequent, prolonged, or bothersome erections; or
* nausea, stomach pain, low fever, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice

Warnings and precautions before taking Androgel:

The drug can be transferred by skin-to-skin contact and can have harmful effects on women, especially pregnant women and their unborn babies. Women who touch AndroGel should wash with soap and water as soon as possible.

If you have a history of heart, kidney, or liver disease and develop swelling in the hands, feet, or ankles, then you should stop using AndroGel. Before using testosterone, you should tell your doctor if you are allergic to it; or if you have any other allergies.

Before using this medicine, you should consult with your doctor or pharmacist if you have breast cancer (males), prostate cancer.

Drug Interaction :-

If you are taking Androgel with certain other drugs, then the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. So it is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Androgel with the following:

*Oxyphenbutazone
*Insulin (Humulin, Novolin)
*Propranolol (Inderal)

Overdose

This medicine may be harmful if swallowed. Symptoms of an overdose may include one-sided weakness, vision problems, or confusion.
