Are Acupuncture Weight Loss Programs Yet Another Fad?

By: Joseph Cole

35% of American adults are obese according to a study conducted in 2004, and it looks like that figure will climb to alarming levels. With many of us looking towards alternative therapies for improving our health acupuncture weight loss treatment is one of the solutions becoming popular in the West. In this article my intention is to explain how acupuncture weight loss treatments can help you.

Believed to have originated more than 2,000 years ago in China, the ancient medical practice of acupuncture is now available all over the country. In fact, a study conducted in 2002 shows that 8.2 million adults in the United States reported to have tried acupuncture, but the question is do acupuncture weight loss treatments really work, or is acupuncture weight loss treatment yet another weight loss scam?

The first thing to keep in mind is that when you lose weight to maintain that weight loss you have to change your eating habits and you lifestyle and this is regardless of whether you take to take acupuncture weight loss treatments, resort to the latest and hottest fad diet or simply cut your calories and do more exercise. I believe regular acupuncture weight loss treatments can make it easier to lose weight, but note that said make it easier, as it cannot directly cause weight loss and is not a magic bullet.

Acupuncture weight loss treatment works by inserting thin sterile needles in specific points on the body which release hormones know as endorphins that have a calm and relaxing, effect. It is believed this makes it easier for you to deal with stress, frustration and anxiety which trigger bingeing and overeating at meal times. These endorphins also affect the digestive system which is why its also believed that acupuncture weight loss treatment could help rebalance your metabolism.

As mentioned, for you to keep the weight you lost off for good requires you make lifestyle changes which means you should commit to getting more exercise and eating healthier meals. Acupuncture weight loss treatments by themselves will not cut it, despite what some claim. While you get basic advice on diet and nutrition from your acupuncturist, many acupuncture weight loss treatments claim that without regular exercise or diet changes you can lose weight.

One good point to note is that when beginning acupuncture weight loss treatment you may be offered an individualized supplement program which includes vitamins, minerals, herbal antioxidants, nutraceuticals and phytochemicals that will support your diet and balance your blood sugar levels so your body has the optimum nutrition to maintain a healthy lifestyle if you make the effort.

Its believed that acupuncture weight loss treatments increases your energy levels, helping you exercise more, reduces your cravings, and improves your circulation, and that this is why you lose weight. Surveys have showed that, even with patients suffering from chronic pain and fatigue for up to 40 years, acupuncture helped a lot to increase energy levels, so it can very well boost your energy level.

Acupuncture weight loss treatment does have a few negative side effects. These include bruising or slight swelling and soreness. You may feel a slightly sedated feeling, and some experience a wooziness or fainting as a result of the very calming effect on the bodys energy while having an acupuncture weight loss treatment. You should always discuss possible side effects before beginning acupuncture weight loss treatments. You should also be sure that needles are either disposable or have been sterilized.

I want to end by saying that while acupuncture weight loss treatments can help aid weight loss, it is still very important to change your eating habits and lifestyle. Important factors which contribute to your weight loss are stress, level of activity and eating habits according to The North American Association for the Study of Obesity. If you want optimum results my suggestion is to focus on improving these factors. While acupuncture weight loss treatments may help, if you want to reach your goal weight this requires work and effort on your part.
