Beginning Visualization - Entering the Mind & Body Connection

By: Elizabeth Bohorquez, RN, C.Ht

It helps to think of the human mind as an internal library filled with shelves of resources. Memories are stored utilizing all of the senses including sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch & are programmed with emotional flavors.. Some of these find their way to consciousness, while others simply sit on the shelves playing out their internal chemistry below the surface. The mind appears to be an endless retrieval system & an endlessly cross-referenced subject catalog.

Let's practice right now. As your eyes read these words you can easily see your bedroom in your mind. Go to your bed & turn back the covers. Feel the softness of your sheets. Now let's switch programs. Sit behind the wheel of your car in traffic. Next go to your office & look through the file drawers. And off to the supermarket, pushing your filled cart up to the checkout. Finally, off to the beach, experiencing the sun touching the top of your head & your toes feeling the hot sand.

You can move from image to image even more rapidly than you read. You can "see" any part of your life effortlessly, as often as it is suggested to you. This is called "inner seeing". The importance of visualization or active imagery in our lives has yet to be adequately explored. The articles in this library are all designed to teach you how to plug into your slide projector & benefit from all the action.

What is the difference between meditation & visualization or self-hypnosis? Meditation works to clear & concentrate the mind. Visualization puts an image in it that can profoundly affect the life. Interactive Self-Hypnosis allows you to BE IN THE ACTION & EFFECT CHANGE.

SOME TECHNIQUES

Visualization is creating a mental image in the mind's eye. When people first begin to practice, the images in their mind's eye are often different from the images that they see with the aid of their retinas. The mental images more resemble thoughts & ideas other than sights. Many people feel they are making up the images, rather than seeing them. This may be because they are consciously appraising their inner images for the first time & are questioning the reality of their inner images with the analytical sphere of their mind.

It is important to practice visualization. Once the individual develops these tools, it becomes easy to work with Interactive Self-Hypnosis & enter the images to perform additional work. Let's work with a small, uncomplicated, two-dimensional object such as a triangle. Find a quiet spot & allow your body to relax. Take several slow deep breaths from the bottom of your feet, bring them all the way up, hold them in your mouth & now let all the breath exit, just as if you were a balloon at the end of a party. Now look directly at the triangle for about a minute. Get very familiar with it. If your attention wanes, bring it back to the triangle. Close your eyes & image the triangle.

Allow your eyes to scan it just as you did when you were looking at it with your eyes open. Notice the shape, the color of the triangle, as well as the color in the center of the triangle. Now open your eyes & look at it again. Compare the two images. Now close your eyes & move the triangle away from you. Now move it up & out. Now down & out.
