Beyond Disorderly Eating - Beginning Self-Exploration

By: Elizabeth Bohorquez, RN, C.Ht

It’s not uncommon for my patients and new students to roll their eyes up when we begin the discussion of self-exploration. It sounds exciting and frightening at the same time and especially if the self-disorganization is big. Just the idea of coming out of hiding and looking in the mirror can be daunting, but it is mostly about the “idea.” This “idea” has kept you in addiction, disorderly eating, bingeing, in emotional pain and away from your creative and authentic self. It’s time to reframe this “idea.”

Reframing is just what the word says, removing an old, ineffectual frame on a picture or idea and placing a new, valuable frame on it instead. Fear is nothing more than a big bully who runs away once you step forward. As we work through the pages of this book you will be stepping forward many times, perhaps more than you can even imagine. Most of us have been bullied by fear since we were children, some brought by others and some provided in-house, by our very own creative subconscious mind. But you are no longer a child. You are grown and in the process of becoming mature. You may be meeting yourself, as a mature adult, in some areas of your life for the very first time.

This is a good moment to bring desire into our conversation. Desire is something we absolutely must have. If someone comes to my office to stop smoking or bingeing, my first question always has to do with desire, as well as the level of desire. I want to sense hot desire. Sometimes it is there and sometimes it isn’t. You already know about levels of desire. You can feel them in your own mind and body. When you really want to do something, the body is like a race horse waiting for the starting bell. When desire is low, the body can be felt backing away from whatever the task. So how about your desire right here and now? I’m going to assume that since you bought the book and you are actually reading it, that your desire is at least warm. That’s ok. It will get hotter as we move along. You are not just reading this book. This book is a therapeutic tool that will effect changes through the subconscious mind exercises and affirmation planting.

A question I’m often asked about now is , “since all we have to do is to have the desire and then to act on our desire, why do we tend to ignore this gigantic opportunity?” Take just a moment and let that question settle in your own subconscious mind. When you are ready, I'll give you some additional insights, but please don't rush your own personal work. As you begin to work with your own inner self, you will find that more answers coming to your own mind that will be very specific for you.

So come along now. Here are some things I've noticed about the lack of desire. Perhaps you have noticed these as well, or perhaps you have others to add to the list. Remember, the more you uncover, the more you can release. Until you take something out of the automatic mind program vault, you can’t discharge or edit it. Take this opportunity to ask yourself if you have others. The subconscious librarian loves to be interviewed, so simply relax and play along.

· Most of us have excuses living on our tongues. For those of us who are tired of the excuse-life, it is often difficult to decide “what to do” instead of “what we are doing”.

· Most of us don’t know how to begin. We think about starting tomorrow, but tomorrow comes and goes and we find ourselves in the same old place.

· We might wake up with good intentions, but then "life interrupts us" and despite our intentions, we fall back into old emotional patterns, beliefs, activities, choices, as if these were the only place to go.

· Before we know it, we are at the end of the day and still "window shopping" in our mind, desiring things that we simply cannot grasp or for some reason , cannot hold on to for long, if at all.

· And so, we tend to live in the land of good intentions and excuses, spending incredible energy on defending ourselves, our positions of inactivity or perceived failure and blaming others for stepping on our toes and our dreams. Most of this constitutes garbage.

Basically, we are all the same. We all have histories, emotional baggage, desires and dreams. While it is true that you may have had a more difficult past than others, you now hold the reins and have the power to decide where you will go and how you will get there. You will be doing many things differently from now on. Some of those things will be obvious and other's not so obvious. You will be consciously aware of some changes, but other changes will simply happen, as if they had a life of their own. You will find yourself replacing old emotional patterns, beliefs, activities and choices. Much of this will be effortless. You will no longer just window shop in life. You will actively choose what you want and act in accordance to make it yours.

This book is opening you up to what you need to know about YOU. Some of the things you need to know are already in your Knowledge base or consciousness. Other things are suppressed or completely out of reach. As you work with the tools presented in this book, you will begin to know more about yourself and your specific needs will become clear.
