Bird flu bites the world – spreads panic

The whole world is waking up to the deadly call of the bird flu virus spreading like wild fire in the forest! Also known as the avian flu, the bird flu is engulfing a large portion of the world’s poultry and is even threatening to spread to humans on a massive scale!

The bird flu virus is present naturally among wild birds. Since it is contagious, it can affect domesticated birds like chickens, turkey and ducks. Many of the infected cases go unnoticed but in extreme cases, the infection can spread throughout flocks of birds and can reach a mortality rate of 90% to 100%.

Human cases of bird flu have been reported in a few countries like China, Thailand and Hong Kong. The virus is unique as it can mutate and change, and is therefore feared to affect humans on a large scale in the coming years. Since the virus can easily spread through casual contact, there is a great risk of the rare infection turning into an epidemic!

The good news is that though there is no cure discovered for the flu, there is preventive medication. Tamiflu is the tested and reliable solution to the problem! Other anti viral medications like Amantadine and Rimantadine are not so effective against the symptoms of the flu. Moreover they cause a number of side effects like nausea, diarrhea and insomnia.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has recommended the massive use of Tamiflu which has shown to be effective against the virus in humans. South Africa has also registered it as the bird flu precaution.

The drug works by attacking the virus at the root rather than masking the symptoms of the flu. The flu causing virus multiplies within the body cells and then spreads to other cells. Tamiflu medication prevents the virus from spreading to other cells and so the virus dies within the host cells. The dosage should be started within 48 hours of the appearance of the symptoms that include fever, sore throat, muscle aches, lethargy eye infections to name a few.

But you need to take a few precautions. The drug is not recommended for pregnant women and also for children below one year of age. Make sure you are not allergic to any of the ingredients of the drug. Also, people with cardiac problems should not use it.

Countries are stocking Tamiflu as a preventive measure against the avian flu. It is assumed that in the coming few weeks the average man will not be able to obtain it. So you know what you need to do! Buy Tamiflu at the earliest to protect yourself and your family.

The prevention of bird flu is essential to prevent a major outbreak! The main weapon against the flu is awareness and education about its preventive measures. Careful handling of infected poultry, consuming well cooked meat and eggs and maintaining a high level of personal hygiene is a few preventive measures. Since bird flu can wipe out millions of people as has happened in the past, it is important that we take the threat seriously and take the health authorities’ slogan ‘everything’s under control’ with a pinch of skepticism!
