Blepharoplasty: Eyelid Surgeries

By: Budda Oliver

Possible Side Effects/ Complications

Typically, the patient will experience mild, temporary side effects from the blepharoplasty surgery. These include things like double or blurred vision for a few days, and temporary swelling at the corners of the eyelids.

Rarely, there may be a slight asymmetry in the healing of the eyelids. Excessive scarring is rarely reported, and choosing a qualified and trustworthy doctor will almost always eliminate this possibility.

Some have reported difficulty closing their eyes when sleeping. This is most likely due to swelling and/or scarring after the eyelid surgery. In the most rare cases, this may become a permanent condition.

Anesthesia

Typically, blepharoplasty surgeries are performed with a local anesthetic agent, along with oral sedatives. This means that while you will be awake for the surgery, the pain and discomfort will be kept to a minimum. You may experience minor discomfort, or the feeling of tugging or pulling in the eyelids.

It is possible, and some surgeons even prefer, to use general anesthetic. With the use of general anesthetic, you will be asleep throughout the procedure and will feel nothing.

Before the Surgery

The most important step for you, the patient, is the planning before the surgery. This is when you will gather your information on the procedure, and discuss the specifics of your personal surgery with your surgeon.

Choosing a qualified, trustworthy surgeon to perform your surgery is probably the most important thing you can do. Having someone perform your surgery who is capable, experienced, and skillful may be the deciding factor of whether you will be satisfied with the results or not. Ask to see before and after pictures of any previous blepharoplasty the doctor has performed.

As with most medical procedures, you will be required to provide your complete medical history to your doctor. Make known any allergies you may have, or medications you are taking or have taken recently. Be as thorough as possible with your surgeon to help ensure the best possible results.

You will discuss with your surgeon, the details of your personal needs and assess what should take place. Explain to the surgeon which eyelids you want to enhance. Will you want surgery on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both? The surgeon will select the right procedures for you, and will decide if there will be any need of removal of excess skin, etc.

On your first visit, your doctor will perform a vision test, as well as assess your tear production levels. This is important, because if your tear production is not sufficient, the procedure may be dangerous.
