Catering: What to expect

By: Tymon Hytem

Over the past few decades, the food service industry has gown tremendously, especially in the area of catering. Food catering is when you provide food at some remote location. It is usually combined with some event planning such as a wedding, an anniversary party, a corporate event, or even a large gathering of friends for a birthday.
While, it is primarily the duty of the hired caterer to provide a feast to satisfy the customer, they also have to provide some presentation to satisfy all the senses. A good caterer provides just that, a wonderful atmosphere with a virtual feast for the eyes, ears, nose, and taste. When you hire a caterer, it is expected that everything is just perfect from the food to the décor to the tableware.
Most caterers not only prepare and serve the food, but they also do a set up of the tables for sit down affairs and or a buffet depending upon what event you have planned. The company that you hire will usually set up tables, attend to your decorations for your event, and prepare and serve the food. A good caterer will make sure to pay attention to even the smallest detail to make your event spectacular. In most cases, there will be a staff that works with the caterer to help get all of this accomplished.
The actual cost of catering will depend upon a variety of things. First, it is based upon the amount of guests that will be at the event. Another thing that caterers take into consideration is the type of food that you will be serving. A sit down meal will cost a bit less than a buffet affair as people tend to go back for seconds and thirds at a buffet and the caterer accounts for this. The cost can also skyrocket if you have having appetizers or even a beverage bar. It will be important for any caterer that you choose to break down all of these costs to give you an idea of an overall price before you sign a contract. Most caterers know that in order to make a profit off of the event, the cost of the catering must be well within the cost of the total event.
