Child Tax Credit - Are You Eligible and How Much Can You Claim

By: Evan Felt

Do You Qualify For The Child Tax Credit?

In today's hectic world, raising children is often demanding, particularly when funds are limited. Children constantly need one thing or another, whether it be new clothes or the newest video games. Managing to find the funds can be nearly impossible at times. However, there are government benefits available for low income and struggling households that can help lighten the burden in these situations.

One of these government benefits is the Child Tax Credit, which was intended and created in order to lend a helping hand to parents and carers of school age children and university students to make certain that children can have their necessities. This has proven to be especially advantageous to low income parents who have kids younger than sixteen or a young person attending school full time.

The Child Tax Credit is based on the number of children in your family and also takes into account the total household income. Additionally with receiving a tax credit for the family, you also can claim a specific amount ofchild benefit for every child that is living in your care. You do not have to be related to the child or children, however you must be the primary caregiver and the children must live in your house.

Claiming the Child Tax Credit is extremely easy. When you initially apply, you are going to need to get a claim pack. Additionally, you will need to provide proof of your identity, which can be as simple as providing your national insurance number. Once you're approved, your Child Tax Credit can be renewed by telephone or by mail. This needs to be done each year and you will receive notification when it is time for you to renew. It is important that you report changes in situation such as any changes in family size and income. Should you forget to report any change, you might be required to pay back the tax credits you've received.

You can receive Child Tax Credits in a number of ways. You can either receive the child allowance on a weekly or monthly basis, and it can be transferred into any bank account you indicate. The Child Tax Credit has to be transferred to the main caretaker's bank account and can be received by cheque, mailed to the address listed on your application. The child benefit can be claimed in addition to the Working Tax Credit, which is a benefit entitlement if you or your partner are working.

If you're denied these benefits, or disagree with your tax credit calculation, you may appeal a tax credit decision. Keep in mind, however, that this must be done within 30 days of your denial notification.
