Dental Devices That You Could Wear for Your Dental Health

By: Carreon Fred

The severe gnashing of teeth coupled with the tight constriction of the jaws. These indicate that the times are testing our patience. Men and women may release tension through potentially harmful mouth movements because of the stressful situations they constantly find themselves in. To release tension, adults may unconsciously grind their teeth and clench their jaws while asleep, and this condition is known as bruxism. The clicking of jaw joints also has become a relatively common neuromuscular problem, causing such side effects as ear pain, headaches and vertigo.

The ratio of women over 40 and men over 40 who are prone to bruxism is four to one, studies show. Releasing tension through the mouth is something observed more among women, while stomach problems because of stress are more commonly observed among men. Though the problem can't be cured through orthodontics, the frustrations causing the tension must be dealt with to effect a cure, damage to the teeth can be prevented by methods that include wearing a plastic retainer or a jaw strap while one sleeps.

Bruxism is only one of the dental problems that orthodontists are trying to come to grips with. For the past years, orthodontics has concerned itself with much more than just straightening of teeth to look good. The entire facial structure, not just the teeth, is the focus of many techniques and theories nowadays.

Adolescent dental problems are not the only problems orthodontics deal with because this area of dentistry relates to a lot of adults too. A dentist said more care has to be exerted when treating adults. Children's tissues bounce back readily, but adult's teeth don't.

He points out that advances have been made in combining orthodontics and plastic surgery to reconstruct severe deformities resulting from such things as protruding jaws, cleft lips and palate. He says that about two thirds of the orthodontic cases treated annually are problems involving jaw growth. Teeth are in the service of the jaw. The teeth will end up wherever it is that the jaw is placed most of the time. Proper jaw growth may be aided through restructuring through surgery or through the use of corrective appliances.

While non compulsory, orthodontics does prevent certain dental diseases from happening. Improper tongue thrust is something that a thumb sucking child could develop and may make the child have a speech impediment. The tongue's strength is capable to shifting teeth to a different position.

Abnormal bite can be corrected if chinstraps are worn, because these things provide upward and downward forces directed toward the lower jaw. Jaw joint problems, loss of teeth, and bone damage could occur as a result of bad bite. An improvement of materials for different dental devices have led to their cosmetic improvements as well. While plastic is preferred because it is aesthetically pleasing, it will not be as effective as metal.

A relatively new radiography apparatus, the laminagraph, is becoming more widely utilized in orthodontics. In one shot, it can take an X ray of the entire dentofacial region, and uses only a small amount of radiation compared to the conventional full mouth Xrays. Individual X rays for locating decay cannot be replaced by laminagraphy, though the latter is still very useful as a diagnostic tool.
