Dental implants best solution for missing teeth

By: Irwin Si....

Tooth loss is a very common problem and can occur due to many reasons such as gum disease, tooth decay, accidental breakage and failure of a root canal procedure. Always remember that if you are missing your permanent teeth then not only the aesthetic aspects are affected but it can also affect your health because you are not able to eat nutritious foods which your body requires, and the germs in your mouth from tooth decay travel into the bloodstream and can have devastating effects on your heart. But you can solve this problem by getting dental implants. There are other options also such as dentures and bridge work but there are many people who think that dental implants are the best option because they are effective, comfortable and secure.

What are dental implants?

In the last fifty years in the field of dentistry the development which dental implants have done is one of the most radical advances. It is an artificial root made of titanium metal which is tough and light and is implanted in the jawbone in place of the root of your missing tooth. And then abutment or extension is fixed to the implants. And finally the artificial tooth is fixed to your jawbone. Hence you can also say that tooth implants serve as an anchor for holding the missing tooth. And in case if there are several missing teeth then you can have several implants. Generally this surgery can be done by local anesthetic where the patient is awake during the process.

How are dental implants done?

Firstly dental x-rays and other examinations are done of your gums and teeth and this is done only to decide whether dental implants are right for you or not. Once it is decided that you are a candidate for implants, you come in for the procedure and the implants are placed into the jawbone and a temporary tooth is attached the same day. Sometimes if there is substantial bone missing in your jaw, some bone grafting may be necessary.
Once the implant is inserted it is allowed to integrate with the bone in that area and heal but always remember that it can take from six weeks to six months. And generally the rough surface of the implants acts as an anchor on which the bone tissue grows.

While your healing procedure is going on you can use bridges or dentures but even better is the possibility of attaching temporary teeth the same day so you can go home feeling better as soon as the implants are placed. Also, always remember that you must take proper care of the implant while it is healing under the crown or denture you wearing.

You must take care of your implants

As implants are fixed inside the jawbone they function and appear like natural teeth. And hence they need to be flossed and cleaned just like your natural teeth. Your dentist will advise you on how to take care of your new teeth. Always remember that you must make sure that you have periodic checkups so that your dental implant specialist can make sure the implants are positioned and anchored well after a period of time.
