Different Causes Of Female Baldness Including Menopause

By: Hailey C Lossen

There are many different reasons why women may experience hair loss. Both men and women tend to lose hair as they increase in age, but we see certain conditions which may propagate more hair loss such as menopause.

Women in menopause may experience some loss of hair during this time because of the hormonal changes they are going through. These hormonal changes affect so many areas of the body that at times, hair is the target. What is happening is estrogen is decreasing in their system. Once estrogen production has decreased, male hormones or androgens play a larger role in the body. This is why hair loss can occur.

Estrogen has an affect on many tissues within the body. It's depletion causes skin to atrophy, and it can increase the likelihood of bone loss. In certain situations, replacing estrogen may be needed.

Women who lose their hair for whatever reason do not usually follow the same pattern as men. They lose hair in a dispersed pattern throughout the scalp. They typically do not experience a receding hair line. Certain diseases can cause hair loss such as syphilis and thyroid disease. It is important to recognize correlations of hair loss with another condition.

If the hair loss is concerning then a doctor should be seen. If someone complains of pain with hair loss or itching and redness, then some other underlying cause might be treated to resolve the issue of hair loss. If the patient has an unusual pattern of hair loss, or if the patient notices weakness, fatigue, cold intolerance, and brittle nails then the hair loss is most likely associated with these symptoms. This is why it is important to note correlations.

Other important points may be to find out whether the patient has been under unusual stress or if they have used different shampoos. Some medications my induce hair loss such as chemotherapy drugs. Some women may have adverse effects to hair products or heated blow drying. Asking pertinent questions can maybe find the correct answer to properly treat the problem.

Hair loss is a problem for men and women, however, women can lose hair specifically due to menopause. The hair will regrow so it is not a serious problem. If a woman is self-conscious, measures like hats, wigs, or something of that nature can be a temporary solution because it is a temporary problem. Products are coming out which advertise successful hair growth for this type of problem, too.
