Do Fat Burning Foods Really Work Or Are They Just Another Fad?

By: Joseph Cole

Fat burning food lists are all over the Internet and claim that you can burn fat and lose weight simply by eating certain foods. It sounds almost too good to be true, but are these fat burning foods for real, or just another weight loss myth sucking you into the next fad diet plan?

Also referred to as negative calorie foods, these lists of fat burning foods mention unprocessed and natural carbohydrate foods which are high in fiber and very low in calories such as fruits and green vegetables. Examples of these foods include asparagus, lettuce, broccoli, green cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, apples, blueberries, cantaloupes, and cranberries.

Why are these fat burning foods often called as negative calorie foods? It’s because some experts say these foods are so low in calories that you use more energy than you take in to digest and process foods. To give you an example of how many calories these foods have let’s take a cup of cucumbers. Compared to a cup of rice which has 200 calories, a cup of cucumbers has only 24 calories.

Foods which are high in fiber and low in calories such as those on fat burning food lists are very healthy and can help you manage your weight. These foods fill you up easily and curb your appetite, and are usually low GI and therefore digested very slowly with little effect on your blood sugar level limiting cravings. Not only that, but they also slow down the digestion of higher GI foods such as white potatoes and white rice when eaten together.

Before you run to your local grocery to buy all the negative calorie foods you can find I should warn you that while they do have many health benefits you will not burn fat effortlessly and lose weight just by eating a bunch of fat burning or negative calorie foods.

It’s important to note that if you keep eating high-fat and high-sugar foods you will still gain weight unless you stop eating these first. Also, when you add butter and other foods, or when you cook anything on these fat burning food lists this changes the caloric make-up and the effect on your body. Experts have also discovered that the calorie deficit from eating negative calorie foods is negligible and does not directly cause much weight loss.

You would have to eat a diet that consists of just raw vegetables and fruits, which is very difficult to do, in order to see considerable weight loss results from fat burning foods. However, negative calorie diets are around which teach you do exactly this, claiming that by following their instructions you can lose as much as 2 pounds of fat every day. Don’t you think that if such diets were as effective as this then studies would exist to prove such claims? Not only is this claim completely baseless but a diet of just negative calorie foods is also very unhealthy.

You will not only be deficient of necessary nutrients which help your body function when you consume a very low number of calories but your body will also break down muscle tissue. When your metabolism slows down in this manner, you suddenly notice that it’s now a lot easier to gain fat which is because, since you do not have as much muscle to provide nutrients to, your body does not need as many calories so can store more as fat.

On top of this, low calorie diets put your body into starvation mode which is where it realizes that it’s not getting anywhere near the energy it needs and decides to conserves it’s stored energy (fat!). In other words, if you do lose fat, it won’t be long before this will stall and if you do continue to lose weight it will be at the expense of rest of your body.

If you ignore the hype, foods such as those which are mentioned on fat burning food lists, which are high in fiber and low in calories, will aid your weight loss and improve your health but don’t forget that contrary to what some may say too much of a good thing is sometimes bad for you.
