Dried Food or Moist Food - Which Is Best For Your Dog?

By: David Craythorn

Occasionally dog owners are confronted with a dilemma about what type of pet food to offer their dogs. Dogs themselves will usually favour the moist kinds of food sold in cans. They are more aromatic and naturally tempting to the dog's palate compared to the dry biscuits that comes in a bag. Your dog's dental well-being, however, depends on the dog being able to eat hard and crunchy items and dry foods serve this purpose well. What's an owner to do?
Many owners come up with a two pronged solution when selecting dog food for their pets. They will mix a serving of dry food with canned, essentially providing their dog the "best of both worlds." When you're giving canned food to your dog, you are going to certainly need to augment it in some way with something the dog can chew and crunch. Chew toys and dog biscuits or treats will help serve this purpose.
Keep in mind that a pet's wellbeing is substantially dependant on the nutritional worth of the food. A dog is only as healthy as the food that it consumes, in many respects. The food you purchase for your dog should preferably meet its dietary needs as best as possible, regardless of whether it's dry or moist. Unfortunately when it comes to commercial dog food you only get what you pay for. Store brands and generic foods tend to be made from inexpensive ingredients and lots of fillers. They will fill your pet, but they might not be the best choices for it. The more costly brands like Science Diet and Eukanuba which advertise that they're "specially formulated" really, to a certain extent, are. They will contain higher quality ingredients and are much better suited to meet your dog's needs.
Actually, as long as you are supplying an effective way for your pet dog to exercise its teeth on a regular basis, it doesn't matter whether you are feeding them moist food or dry. In the course of regular veterinary checkups a veterinarian will examine the pet's teeth and can warn you if there's any issue that should be remedied by providing another sort of food or some health supplement.
The major reason why dogs need to be able to chew on hard materials is twofold. It fortifies their teeth and gives a work out to the muscle tissue of the jaw, keeping teeth strong and the jaws powerful. Additionally, it provides a form of dental hygiene. Owners should clean their dogs' teeth no less than two times per week. If this isn't possible, however, crunchy foods like dog biscuits act as a kind of natural toothbrush for the dog, helping to loosen plaque and tartar and cleansing the teeth.
Choosing the ultimate food for your dog is important, both for the pooch's nutritional needs and its good dental health. Should you prefer to provide your dog the tastier soft, moist foods that are sold in a can that's OK, just be sure you're also providing something for Rover to actually sink his teeth into.
