For Classic Style, Go For A Clawfoot Tub

By: jerrybrecken

Clawfoot tubs have a distinctive style. You've seen them - they look old-fashioned with smooth rolled rims, resting on four legs with the "feet" resembling claws. Following is an overview of clawfoot (often referred to as Victorian style) bathtubs and their top manufacturers.

* The style originally became popular in the mid 19th century, and were made of cast iron, with a finish made from porcelain. The European and American styles of mounting hardware, such as faucets, differ in that the former mounts it on the wall, while the latter mounts it on the bathtub itself.
* While the original cast iron style is very solid, more modern materials like acrylic give you the same great look, but they make the tub lighter and easier to maintain.
* Some have a slanted back, which makes it very easy to ease back and enjoy the soaking comfort.
* Slipper tubs, on the other hand, have a high back.
* Pedestal bathtubs differ in the fact they sit on a pedestal versus legs. They have a very elegant look indeed.
* Clawfoot and pedestal bath tubs are freestanding, and thus are relatively easy to install, since no carpentry or masonry has to be done, and the exposed pipes make maintenance and repair easy.

Here are the top brands to look at:

* Barclay Products designs Victorian style clawfoot tubs made from both cast iron and acrylic, but with very modern accessories. Barclay combines the best of the old and the new in their products.
* Cheviot makes several elegant lines of pedestal and clawfoot tubs, including the Slipper Bath, Traditional Roll Top , Regency, Windsor and Balmoral Baths.
* When shopping online, your best choice is Vintage Tub & Bath, a vendor who specializes in reproductions of these styles.

A beautiful old-fashioned Victorian clawfoot tub can give a classy touch to your bathroom.
