General Anesthesia Every Visit is Not So Affordable

By: margie madden

My dentist a decade ago knew what I meant and actually did something about it. Waiting for me to get numb takes a while but he had the patience to wait for that time before proceeding. He also looked over my X rays and did some experiments to determine that the nerve usually targeted with novocain actually went in a different location to numb me effectively with a single shot. When I left that area, however, I could not find anyone in my new place who understands my anesthesia issue in that manner so I stopped going to the dentist.

Just a year ago, a terrible toothache pushed me to get over this hump. One of my wife's friends recommended a dentist who checked out my teeth. He did try injecting me with novocain several times and then he said he needs to refer me to a special dentist for my case in San Francisco.

I did not have a hard time getting comfortable in this dental office because it is among the few ones that offer general anesthesia for every dental work. The staff was very attentive and had me fill out a survey that went over all the things I might have issues with. It even had a section that covered my fleeing instinct. It asked whether I postpone dental appointments continually, which I did.

They put me under general anesthesia in the office just to be able to do every needed work on my teeth in one visit. Most of the patients will not afford an every visit general anesthesia. I had to pay a little over $1,000 just to avail of the anesthesia, and that is big for an extra cost. What the need to do in my case is to do a prophylaxis and they had to get one side of my mouth ready for them to put on a crown. They shaved down one tooth because the surface was damaged and prepped another tooth for root canal work.

I could not remember the duration of the entire procedure. Had it not been for the general anesthesia, I must have needed to go back three more times after the first session and that is not at all appealing to me. Basing solely on the cost of having local anesthesia four times and skipping work four times as well and the price of one appointment but with general anesthesia, you can easily make up your mind.

I did not get all queasy because of the general anesthesia, but I cannot help but sleep the entire day. My wife ended up sick as a dog for three days after having four wisdom teeth cut out in a single procedure under general anesthesia. My insurance does not pay for the soothing agent, but they did shoulder the other workup which amounted to approximately $1,000. Nonetheless, a tooth required root canal surgery care of another dentist that involves another sedation and this costs $1,200.

Needless to say, I used up all my insurance early that year. I knew that if this will happen again, I will go through the same steps. I most likely would have left if it were a local anesthesia and was not able to manage the procedure at all. Now that the big time work is done, I just need to return to the needle less procedures such as teeth cleaning. But I still get alarmed whenever I think about dental procedures.
