Grease Tickets

By: travelmayor

The musical Grease by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey is set in the 1959 fictional Rydell High in Chicago. Its main issues are teenage pregnancy and gang violence and the themes include love, friendship, teenage rebellion and sexual exploration during adolescence, and, to some degree, class consciousness/class conflict. Producers of Grease script and theme Ken Waissman and Maxine Fox first saw it as ‘a play with music’ at the Kingston Mines Theater in the Old Town section of Chicago, when it premiered in 1971. They decided to re-work and expand and eventually Grease opened at the Eden Theatre in downtown Manhattan on February 14, 1972.

Directed by Tom Moore and choreographed by Patricia Birch, the Broadway production opened June 7, 1972 at the Broadhurst Theatre. It later moved to the Royale and then to the Majestic, where it closed on April 13, 1980, after 3,388 performances. Grease on broadway became a West End hit, a hugely successful film and popular grease cast, a popular 1994 Broadway revival, and a staple of regional theatre, summer stock, community theatre, and high school drama groups.

Barry Bostwick (as Danny), Carole Demas (as Sandy), Adrienne Barbeau, Timothy Meyers, and Walter Bobbie were the part of the original cast.

This how the story goes:

Sandy Dumbrowski is welcomed with open arms by Rydell High School's rebellious, thrill-loving students. She had a brief love affair with the leader of the tough Burger Palace Boys gang, Danny Zuko, the summer before but it couldn’t evolve into something more. Danny just stresses the physical aspects and Sandy is all about emotions. While she is happy to see him at school, he blows her off. The girls experiment with wine, cigarettes and pierced ears and the boys focus on fast cars, mooning and the upcoming school dance.

Danny tries to apologize for his behavior but Sandy can’t forgive him as he ruins everything by telling the guys that she is ‘easy’. She stays away from the school dance and Danny and Cha-Cha win the dance contest. Rizzo gets back together with her guy, Kenickie. Still, there is no progress with Danny and Sandy. Sandy transforms herself into a greaser's dream date, leaving Danny "All Choked Up."

The show Grease had many nominations in the 1972 Tony Awards and won the following: Best Actor in a Musical - Barry Bostwick, Best Featured Actor in a Musical - Timothy Meyers, Best Costume Design - Carrie F. Robbins. Adrienne Barbeau got the 1972 Theatre World Award and in the 1972 Drama Desk Awards Patricia Birch was awarded for Outstanding Choreography and Carrie F. Robbins for Most Promising Costume Design. Plans for a new Broadway production are underway. Directed by Kathleen Marshall and produced by British theatre mogul David Ian, it is scheduled for June 2007. Sandy and Danny were cast via NBC's show ‘Grease: You're the One that I Want!’ and musical theatre acting veterans Max Crumm and Laura Osnes won.

Grease the muscial is Produced by David Ian, another West End production is also scheduled with Sandy and Danny similarly being cast via a TV show, ITV's ‘Grease Is The Word’. Some songs from the 1978 movie that were not featured in the original musical will be featured in the 2007 US revival.
