Herbs and Herbal Supplements for Natural Eczema Treatment

By: alien

Medicinal Herbs for natural eczema treatment focus on the causes of eczema, which most holistic practitioners view as a symptom of multifactional health problems.

Any herbal eczema treatment will vary depending on the underlying cause; allergies, food sensitivities, stress, poor digestion, sluggish liver and bowel function and nutritional deficiencies can all contribute to eczema.

Natural eczema treatment usually involves using herbal preparations topically and also taking herbs internally aimed at treating the cause of Eczema, and usually respond well when treated holistically.

Medicinal Herbs Used for The Natural Treatment of Eczema

Boswellia (Boswellia serrata)
Boswellia resin has anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. The active constituents, boswellic acids, reduce the formation of inflammatory leukotrienes. Boswellia resin is indicated in the natural treatment of many inflammatory conditions including eczema.

Liquorice Root (Glcyrrhiza glabra)

By supporting adrenal function, liquorice helps improve energy levels and general well being during times of stress. In addition, liquorice is also a mild laxative that supports digestion. Liquorice root is also an effective anti-inflammatory herb that will sooth eczema from within.

Sage (Salvia officinalis)

Sage topically is an effective anti-pruritic (relieves itching), and when combined with a soothing herb topically, such as marshmallow, helps to relieve irritated and itchy skin. A good topical herbal preparation will also have antiseptic and anti-inflammatory herbs as part of a total skin preparation to ease the symptoms of eczema.

Golden Seal (Hydrastis Canadensis)

Topically, golden seal is an effective antibacterial, mainly due to its berberine content. When used in combination with marshmallow to sooth inflamed skin it will reduce inflammation. Internally, golden seal has historically been called the "King of Tonics", and is used as an antibiotic and liver tonic. This herb will increase bile production which acts to detoxify the body by increasing elimination.

Evening Primrose (Oenothera biennis)

Evening primrose oil (EPO) is high in an essential fatty acid, called gamma linoleic acid (GLA) and is a very effective anti-inflammatory herb that, like liquorice, will sooth the gut and eczema lesions as part of a total approach to treating eczema.

Burdock, Yellow Dock (Rumex crispus),Dandelion (Taraxicum officinalis)

These herbs are referred to as “blood purifiers”; working to improve digestive function by increasing bile output from the gall bladder into the small intestine. Many traditional herbalists will prescribe these herbs together as an overall tonic for the liver and gall bladder. If we view our liver as the main filter for removing toxins and metabolic by-products from our body; we can see that by improving liver function, the herbalist helps the body to remove unwanted waste as a primary treatment before resorting to stronger herbs.

Blood purifiers are also referred to as restoratives where they assist the body to heal itself and address the underlying cause of many conditions, including eczema, dermatitis and acne. Secondly, by improving the quality of our digestion in combination with a low allergy diet, the absorption of allergens from the diet is decreased and the quality of what we absorb from our food is improved.

High Fiber Diet, Vitamin C and E and Lots of Water for Natural Treatment of Eczema

Herbal eczema treatments work best when combined with a high fibre, low allergy diet. If you have eczema, chances are that your digestion and liver function are not working at their optimum. Drink a minimum of eight glasses of filtered water a day and take a supplement containing zinc, Vitamin C and E in a formula designed for eczema.

Topically, herbal eczema treatment will usually combine antiseptic herbs and herbs that sooth the inflamed area. Internally, herbs for eczema treatment will address digestion with a focus on improving liver function and the gut wall to improve the body’s natural absorption and elimination by improving your digestion and over time, help you to eczema free skin.
