Indeed, we are fortunate in this day and time that gemstones are available to all who can afford them. Diamonds have become the standard for engagement rings and are available in a range of sizes and prices to fit most pocketbooks.

Pearls differ from the other gemstones since this is the only gemstone that is created by a living organism, rather than being a creation from within the earth.|

The advent of the cultured pearl in the early 1900's has placed pearls affordable for most budgets, unlike earlier history where they were only available to, royalty and the very rich.

During Cleopatra's reign there is a tale that she made a wager with Marc Antony claiming she could host the highest priced dinner ever in history. As they faced empty plates he wondered how she would pull it off, when she crushed one of her pearl earrings, and place it in a vessel of sour wine where it dissolved, and then she drank it down. It is estimated that, on today's market that very pearl would have a value of $9,000,000. An expensive dinner indeed.

When the Roman Empire was the great world power and pearls had extreme value, one general is claimed to have financed an entire military campaign with the monies brought by the sale of one of his mother's earrings.

A number of the gemstones frequently are worn as a birthstone in necklaces, rings and other jewelry as well as being featured in many jewelry items for the pleasure of the wearer regardless whether that gemstone is related to your birthday or not. Every gemstone comes with a history of powers is can grant the wearer.

Today we have the privilege of enjoying symbolic or mystical powers given by each of these gemstones despite our station in life. Unlike other material things we have today, the gemstones are each distinctive, and unlike any other, nature has given individual characteristics to each one.
