However, we cannot and should not use the normal massage oils meant for adults during baby massage, as these products may contain ingredients/chemicals which are not suitable for babies.

Baby Massage Tips

1. It is a good practice to keep all things you ready before you start rubbing the oil on the baby's body. This includes the baby massage oil or the vegetable oil, tissues, clean diapers and clothes.

2. Baby's skin is very soft and bracelet, rings and long nails might hurt your child accidentally. So keep your fingernails short and keep aside the jewellery pieces you wear on hands when you are massaging the baby.

3. Spread a altering mat or a soft towel on a flat surface and undress the baby. Put the baby down with his or her face up.

4. Rub only about half-a-teaspoon of oil at a time on your palms so they glide easily on the baby's body. You can apply more oil later as needed.

5. Make sure that your palms are warm. Aromatherapy oils for adults may not be suitable for the baby

Baby Massage Steps

1. Prepare the Baby

An ideal time for massage is right away following baby's bath time. If baby has not just emerged from the bath, you will have to undress him. Again, be sure that the room is warm enough. Try talking or singing to your baby to help him relax.

2. Head and Face

Begin by softly massage across baby's forehead and down to his temples with the tips of your fingers. Move down to his cheeks, along the jawline, and onto his chin.

3. Shoulders and Arms

Gently grasp baby by his upper arms and use your thumbs to massage his shoulders.

Work your way down his arms, but be careful near his elbows - this is a sensitive area! Continue down his arms and onto his hands, paying particular attention to his palms.

Baby Massage Benefits

Massage, by encouraging contact and touching, boosts the release of hormones and enzymes that promote growth.
