How to Benefit Most When Choosing an Affiliate Program

By: John Farina

Using the Internet to market products and services has become, without a doubt, the easiest and most rewarding method in history. Compared to the old, traditional marketing methods, Internet marketing has the power to reach and sell to the vast untold numbers of Internet users worldwide. With millions of new people coming on-line everyday, that translates into an enormous possibility for an Internet marketer to generate a huge income.
Merchandisers, however, are not the only ones who can benefit from on-line marketing. Nowadays, individuals can operate an extremely lucrative business selling other people's products or services through affiliate programs. An affiliate is simply a marketer who makes it his/her business to refer potential buyers to a merchant's business or product. In return, the affiliate receives a commission when a sale is made. This payment is usually a percentage of the sale.
Of course, the key to becoming successful as an affiliate starts with the marketer choosing the right affiliate program. Since people are as different as snowflakes, making the choice of the "Right" affiliate program becomes equally different for each marketer. A program that proves to be rewarding for one marketer may just as easily be a huge "bust" for another. Your success will be determined not only by the affiliate program you choose, but by the marketing methods, techniques and energies you employ. In a nutshell, the success of any affiliate program is directly proportional to the affiliate marketer him/herself.
When selecting an affiliate program, you will want to do your homework before you "sign-up". Since almost all affiliate programs are free to join, signing up is relatively easy but that does not mean that selling the product/service will be easy. Some affiliate programs require that you purchase the product or service BEFORE you can be their affiliate. This in and of itself is not a bad idea. After all, if you are going to be promoting a product or service, you really should have some kind of first hand knowledge about its quality. The more you know about this product/service, the easier it will be to refer.
Here are some suggestions to help with the selection process when choosing an affiliate program:
Try to choose a product/service that you have a workable knowledge about. You should know about the product's owner/creator and any previous products from this person.
Choosing a product/service that you are interested in will go a long way toward financial rewards. If you don't really like the product/service, you can expect to do a less than stellar job at promoting it.
The product/service you select, must have a "Sales Appeal" to the general public if you have any hope at all of making money. If the product/service isn't sellable, what's the point? Ask yourself: if I were the customer, would I buy it? Would I recommend it to my family or good friend? If you can't convince yourself or your family and friends to buy it, you are going to want to take a look at other programs/products.
The affiliate program must supply a good amount of sales material to its affiliates. That is; quality graphics, pre-written sales letters, classified ads, banners etc. The affiliate cannot be expected to create these from scratch. The cost would be counter-productive. Remember that affiliate marketing is a partnership, so make sure your partner is able to support you as you help him/her promote his/her products/services.
The affiliate program should offer a large percentage commission and have a solid payment policy in place. That is to say, the program should pay no less than 50% and tell you up front, when you will receive your commission payments. Some affiliate programs offer immediate payment BEFORE the merchandiser collects their portion. Other programs pay once a month but only after the refund time as lapsed.
The product/service that you would be selling should have a reasonable guarantee and assurances that the owner would supply adequate after-sale support if needed.
The whole key is based on information. The more information you gather BEFORE you sign-on, the easier it will be to market the product/service. Each program you examine will have advantages and disadvantages. Write them down and do a comparison of different programs. Be informed! An informed choice is your BEST choice.
