Just Start Writing!

By: Robert Brady

I have just finished writing three articles on helps for writing an autobiography: Getting Started, Autobiography Characteristics, and the importance of writing your autobiography.

Remember: Writing is most important!

Just start writing. That's the most important thing.

Your style will improve the more you write.

Pick up a pen. Now.

On what topic should you write?

The choices are infinite:

Your morning routine. Do you always get up on the same side of the bed? Do you have to hit the snooze exactly 3 times every morning?

Your first boyfriend or girlfriend.

Your parents quirky habits.

Who did you sit next to in homeroom? What was that person like? Were you friends?

Lessons learned. Life's short, do something worthwhile. Work stinks, but sometimes you have to do what you have to do. Life's a crap sandwich and everyday you have to take a bite.

Your coworkers. What was the most annoying thing a fellow worker ever did?

Heroes. Your dad. Your mom. A teacher. A friend.

Inspirations.

First kiss. Who was it with? Was it a double dare? Was it a first love?

Talents. Do you play piano? Can you paint? Whistle really well?

There's a starter list. Get going.

Don't freeze in the face of writing something. Forget the conventions and write.

You have to have rules. If we didn't, no one would write anything that anyone could read. Think of the rules more as guidelines. A map as you will. You know where you're headed. There are a bunch of ways to get there.

Say it out loud first and then write it. The writing will more closely match your speaking style. It will be more natural.

Is spelling not your forte? I used to be a great speller. The word processor has broken me of that habit. I rely on the spell checker to keep me straight.

Your first reader is you. Don't be too critical.

Writer after writer will tell you that you have to be willing to write a poor first draft. It's true. The words will flow more freely. You can change things later.

If you're planning on writing only one draft, who cares. Be you. Put yourself into it. Readers will forgive spelling and grammatical mistakes if they can sense honesty and personality in the writing. This is especially true in an autobiography or other personal writing.

If you go blank, make a list. (I touch more on this in a subsequent article.) Lists are magical. Look at the list above. I'm sure ideas have already started.

Get started. Write now. You can do it
