Know What Is In Dietary Supplements

By: Steve Geysbeek

Imagine the supplements in the grocery stores; they boast rows with tempting prices along with odd labels. But where do these supplements come from? Who is to blame for the quality control? When it comes to grocery store supplement safety the response is more muddled than it should be. Taking a closer look at the companies and what kind of quality control they draw on is one mode to make absolutely certain you know what you are buying; ask yourself "who is testing these products?"

One thing is for certain, the FDA already has the laws in place to make sure companies go along with a variety of guidelines for quality. How therefore is it feasible that on March 2, 2010 the makers and sellers of fish oil supplements were sued by the Mateel Environmental Justice Foundation in California for not telling customers that their products included toxic levels of PCBs? The FDA did not go after these companies, California did. California has a directive called Proposition 65 which requires placing a warning label on all products that contain toxic ingredients. Just take a close look at most commercial grocery store cleaning goods; a large amount of them have warning labels.

The ones being sued are Omega Protein (the world's leading producer of omega-3 fish oil) as well as the companies they fashioned fish oil for. These companies include: Rite Aid, CVS, GNC, Now Health Group, Pharmavite, Solgar and Twinlab. That's not the whole picture. The Mateel Environmental Justice Foundation just tested 10 omega-3 supplements that were made by this business and every one of them contained PCBs. The foundation plans to affix further companies to this complaint, if necessary, as other testing is being done.

What is still scarier is that nearly all of the labels claimed that the product was treated to reduce or get rid of PCBs. Leading folks along the primrose path via either not being informed of the crisis or blatantly ignoring it is not safe business practice.

That not chilling enough? How about this; the FDA has announced a mammoth recall of goods containing textured vegetable oil protein made by Basic Food Flavors because of salmonella contamination. There are at least 56 different kinds of consumer goods that contain this company's vegetable oil protein, they consist of; salad dressing, dips, packaged food and drink, potato chips and soup mixes. That means this take back will be immense and affect a lot of the foods many folks use everyday.

Here are some ideas on what to look for in a nutrition company:

A: Obtain your supplements from a upright, time-honored corporation celebrated for superiority and integrity; one that has been around for many years and has an established track record.

B: Make sure this company does countless and top quality testing on quality control, a company who is not afraid to send it to an independent laboratory to have products tested. You desire a corporation that insists on pharmaceutical grade quality stipulations for its products.

C: Published clinical tests are an important issue in understanding what you are dealing with. These ought to incorporate and provide evidence of both safety and effectiveness. go for a company that has published and has continued to publish many clinical studies rather than a company who simply does hardly any or not any at all.

Knowing that your dietary supplements are dependable and real will put your thoughts at ease. Complete your look into and discover the company that goes to the furthest for purity, safety and superiority.
