Managing Stress: Long-Term Stress Problems

By: Andrew John

If you are stressed regularly but don't do anything to fix it, you suffer from long term stress. Such situation is extremely dangerous both for you body and for your psyche. The chances are that at least one of the following problems will show up.

The first visible problems born from long-term stress are psychological ones: anxiety and depression are two most common. They cause us to push away others and are a serious obstacle in our professional careers. However, that is only a beginning. Soon after there comes an increased risk of heart problems related to high blood pressure typical for stressed people. Stress may be responsible for triggering an unstable angina or even a heart attack. If you are stressed, you have to know that your life expectancy has just dropped rapidly. So, even if you do not believe is stress, you will have to believe in taking more and more pills prescribed by your doctor.

However, it is still only the beginning. Soon after risen blood pressure you will start to suffer from various diseases - nothing too serious, but you will soon notice that you don't heal at the same speed anymore. Everything because stress got to your immune system and caused it do be much less effective than normally. As it also hits the digestive system, you can expect all kind of intestines-related problems such as diarrhea.

The problems caused by chronic stress does not end there. Stress usually affects our diet requirements as well as decrease our abilities to make logical informed choices concerning what we should and shouldn't eat. As the result, the risk of extreme obesity and anorexia skyrockets. Food becomes our archenemy or just the opposite - the only tool we use to cope with stress. Either way, the results are disastrous to our well-being. and we haven't even started talking about other problems such as arthritis or diabetes that can be developed under chronic stress.

Another problem brought by chronic stress is sleeping disorders, usually insomnia. All too often we find ourselves anxious and full fo thoughts just before we go to sleep. Oftentimes we can't relax all the night and this effectively prevents us from getting even a few minutes of sleep. This makes us even more tired and weary which in turn increases the stress level and creates a perfect example of an endless loop. You have to break it before it gets too far. However, remember that sleeping pills are known to cause problems you'd never expect them to. Addictions, nervous breakdown, stomach problems and accidental overdosing are a real problem to most people suffering from prolonged stress.
