Marketing Your Product: The Art of Displays

By: Tymon Hytem

When owning a business that sells product, one of the most critical points in your business is how you display your products. Your displays are what will draw in the customers. It is these displays that are crucial to sway your customer’s first impressions and make them want to purchase your product. There are several things to consider when determining just how to properly merchandise and display your products.
Planning out your display before you merchandize your product is an important thing to do. You need to determine the size of the space where you are going to set up your display. One of the easiest ways to do this is by making a complete sketch of your shop on graft paper. Make sure to label the sales area, any permanent display counters and larger displays. This will give you a good idea of the layout of your establishment and how much space you have to play with. Once you have established this, then need to determine how you will display your products. You want to make sure that your displays are easily changeable as you want to be able to switch things around seasonally and by interest. You want your displays to stimulate the interest of the customer.
Once you have generated a layout of your display plan, then you need to determine the types of displays that you are going to use. Displays come in all sizes and shapes. You want to make sure that the display size first works in your space, but also is convenient for the customer. By convenient we mean making sure that you customer can see your product that is on display and that your displays do not block your customer’s line of vision around your store. If your customer cannot see the products, then they will not purchase the products. Make it easy for your customers to see what you have and they will buy it.
Once you have your fixtures and displays in position, now you need to think about setting up your products. You want to make sure that the display will adequately present your products in the most attractive fashion possible. Think about when you go shopping, what kind of displays grab your attention. These are the types of displays that you need to have in your establishment to help sell your products.
It is not rocket science to choose displays, but it can make or break your business. If it is difficult for a customer to see what you have or to access it, then they are more than likely not to make a purchase from you. Take some time and establish a floor plan for your space. Then think about what type of displays will show off your merchandise. You don’t have to spend a fortune on displays to effectively sell your wares.
