Natural Home Remedies for GERD (Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease)

By: dr. sarkozy mikal

Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease commonly referred to as GERD or acid reflux, is a condition in which the liquid content of the stomach regurgitates (backs up or refluxes) into the esophagus.

The liquid can arouse and damage the inside layer (cause, cause esophagitis) of the gullet although visible signs of irritation occur in a alternative of patients.

The regurgitate liquid usually contain acid and pepsin that are produced by the stomach. (Pepsin is an enzyme that begins the absorption of proteins in the stomach.) The refluxed liquid also may contain bile that has back-up into the stomach from the duodenum.

When the stomach contents move backward into the esophagus, this is known as gastro esophageal reflux. (Because the stomach makes acid to help a person digest food, gastro esophageal reflux is also known as acid reflux.)
Almost everyone has this type of reflux at some time. Often a person isn't even aware that it is happening.

Causes of GERD

GERD occurs when a muscle at the lower end of the esophagus does not work properly. The muscle is called the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). Sphincters are ring-like band of muscle that contract, or squeeze together, to close off body passageways.

• The LES acts like a one-way control device that closes off the esophagus. It allows food to travel freely descending into the stomach. But it also seal off the stomach, prevent partially digested food from refluxing, or passing back up, through the esophagus.

• Normally, the LES closes right away after a person swallow food, keeping irritating stomach acid and digestive enzymes out of the esophagus.

• In individuals with GERD, the LES may not shut in a normal way or relax inappropriately between swallows. Stomach juices and partly digest food may flow back up and burn the lower gullet. The result is indigestion and other symptoms of GERD.
