Nutrition For ADHD Children, Natural Treatment For ADHD

By: Steve Geysbeek

So many children today have been diagnosed as having Attention Deficit / hyperactivity disorder. When this occurs many kids are put on drugs that may do more harm than good. What is a parent to do besides suffer along with their children? Look into alternative answers ; natural answers. Lots of the children I grew up with who were prescribed these medications either sold them or took them in a way the tablets were not meant to be taken.

How can this cycle of prescribing drugs with side-effects from suicidal thoughts and anorexia to substance abuse be useful to young kids whose bodies are still developing? Is there a better, more natural way to make a difference in these kids' lives?

The proverb, you are what you eat, is true. Hence what exactly are youngsters eating now-a-days which make them more susceptible to hyperactive afflictions? What can be removed from their diets or added, that could help how their bodies process nutrient elements and information.

every year between three and ten percent of school aged children are diagnosed as having Attention Deficit / hyperactivity disorder ( ADHD ), often referred to as hyperactivity. The majority of these children are presently being treated with drugs.

And these drugs have complications - starting from relatively minor ( loss of appetite, weight loss, sleeplessness and personality changes ) to major ( suicidal thoughts, crazy behaviour and drug abuse ).

So it is just natural for parents to ask whether there's a more natural angle that they could follow and, more especially, whether diet could make a difference.

to answer that question lets start by having a look at only one side of children's diets - the skyrocketing prevalence of synthesised food colours and additives in the diet. The average child today is consuming over 10 pounds of food additions every year!

the idea food additions - especially artificial colors and additives - could be responsible for hyperactivity was first raised by Dr. Ben Feingold over 30 years ago. He devised the Feingold Diet - a diet that was freed from synthetic food colors, additives and other synthesised food additions.

Some tiny scale clinical trials advised that the diet could be successful and millions of mums and dads utilised the diet for their hyperactive children with great success.

But the medical authorities pooh-poohed the Feingold Diet. They illustrated that when elders are putting their kid on a special diet they're also giving that child more attention - and it might be the parent's heightened attention that decreased the child's hyperactive behavior.

They also indicated when you eliminate food additives from the diet you are decreasing the "junk" food and rocketing fresh fruit and vegetables - in short the child's diet is much more healthy.

So ultimately the Feingold Diet lost recognition but the idea that synthetic food colours & additives might trigger hyperactivity has declined to depart.

in reality 2 current studies have substantially braced the linkage between artificial ingredients and hyperactivity.

The first study was a meta-analysis of fifteen previous studies taking a look at the effect of artificial food colors and chemicals on hyperactivity ( book of developmental & behavior Pediatrics, twenty-five : 423-434, 2004 ).

This meta-analysis concluded that synthetic food colors & additives caused an increase in hyperactivity in 28% of the children tested.

almost all of the children in those previous studies were chosen for the study because they'd been diagnosed as hyperactive ( ADHD ).

nevertheless a fresh study looked at 297 kids from Southampton England who hadn't been diagnosed as hyperactive ( Lancet, 370 : 1560-1567, 2007 ).

After a 8 week elimination phase in which artificial food colours and preservatives were removed from their diets, they were given an one week challenge consisting of fruit juice containing one of 2 different mixtures of four synthesised food colors and the preservative sodium benzoate or a worthless pill.

The quantity of artificial food colours and sodium benzoate in the fruit juice drinks was built to match the average amount found in the English diet ( which isn't all that different from the American diet ).

Once again, the results were clear. The amount of synthesised food colours and chemicals found in the everyday child's diet will trigger hyperactivity in numerous kids.

So what does that imply to you if you've got a hyperactive child? Could the easy act of getting shot of synthetic colors, tastes & additives from your child's diet eliminate hyperactivity and give you back that calm, sweet child that you love?

The available data suggest that removing synthesised food additions from your child's diet can make a difference in their behaviour, but I tend to side with experts who suggest a holistic approach is best.

getting rid of food additions from your child's diet is significant, but also make sure the diet is a good one, that your youngster is getting all of the nutrient elements that they need and that they are getting all of the attention and support that they require.
