Omega-3 Glucosamine and Chondroitin: Are they arthritis savers

By: Richard Haigh

A lot has been said about Omega-3 fatty acids and it is very well documented for their capability to decrease irritation. With very strong anti-inflammation properties, it makes very good sense that fish oils are being talked about as an aid In the care of arthritis. The question is does it really work? Is It a cure?

As with most alternative medicine therapies, there is not yet sufficient research to conclude whether fish oil is truly efficacious in relieving the symptoms associated with arthritis. However, early research is encouraging.

The latest clinical trials and studies have stated that fish oil, because of structure of omega-3 , can be very be usefull in reducing stiff morning muscles and tiring joints that most arthritis sufferers have. Researchers have not yet concluded the correct amount of dosage for effectiveness, nor how long treatment should last.

There is a very important issue for people that are on medications that affect their blood and that is: researchers have found that fish oil supplementation can, in some cases increase the risk of blood's ability to clot.

Fish oil supplementation has also been shown to interact with blood pressure medications. Apparently, taking fish oil supplements while taking high blood pressure medications may cause their blood pressure to lower significantly.

Some fish, notably: swordfish, tuna, king mackerel, tilefish, and shark, have very high levels of mercury and this makes consuming fish oils a risk particularly to young children, and women who are pregnant or nursing.

This risk must be avoided and the best way to do that is to call up the manufacturer and ask about their mercury levels.

In the main, it must be said that the small risk of consuming fish oil is not great and is far out weighted by the benefits. It may only be slight stomach upset and gas.

Glusosamine and Chondrotin are two very usefull dietary supplements even through they have not been proven by the boffins in the resaearch labs.

Even through they are not yet proven to help with arthritis, there has been some research done with these two supplements and there effects on animals. Both supplements have been found to contain anti-inflammatory properties.

Both of these supplements are becoming very popular among arthritis sufferers despite the lack of evidence.Indeed my own doctor told me not to waste my time or money taking Glucosamine and Chondrotin but I would not be without them.I take them with Aloe Vera in a drink called Freedom ( see my site www.aloeveraexpress.com for details )

They are often sold in combination to one another and can also be brought with Aloe Vera.I personal take the supplements in this form;please see www.aloeveraexpress.com for details But do they really work? Here is some information that will help you decide if these two dietary supplements are right for you.

What is Glucosamine?

Its full name is Glucosamine sulfate, and it is a natural substance that is found in the joints. Beside your own joint fluid, Glucosamine can also be found in certain sea creatures, including the shells of crabs, lobsters, and shrimps. Scientists can also create Glucosamine in the laboratory. Our bodies create our own steady supply of Glucosamine that it uses to create and repair lost cartilage. Cartilage is important because it keeps bones from rubbing against each other and absorbs the shock and force of the impact.

Glucosamine is considered very safe for most people. Those people prone to allergic reactions may experience a worsening of symptoms. Also, some research has concluded that Glucosamine can raise high blood sugar levels and cause insulin levels to rise for those with diabetes.

Chondroitin sulfate is another natural substance found in the body. It prevents other body enzymes from degrading the building blocks of joint cartilage. The type sold in health-food stores and pharmacies is derived from animal products.

As for Chondroitin, it also appears to be safe for most people. Some medical researchers believe that Chondroitin can worsen pre-existing conditions, such as asthma, allergies, and certain cancers. The most common side effects of Chondroitin include nausea and stomach irritation.

Conclusion:The consensus is that Glucosamine and Chondroitin supplements might lessen pain in some patients with osteoarthritis. Many doctors now believe it is worth trying these supplements for osteoarthritis. They appear to be safe, but doctors are warning patients that the quality and effectiveness of glucosamine and chondroitin varies because of the non-regulation. If you want to try them, buy high quality products from a reputable source.
