Painkiller addiction is emerging as a potential peril

By: Joseph1973

Painkillers are a member of the group of drugs widely exercised to relieve pain without causing a loss of consciousness. This analgesics or painkillers behave in various ways on the peripheral and central nervous systems. There are two major categories of painkillers available in the market, such as narcotic and non-narcotic. The narcotic painkillers are used generally for short term use of alleviating severe pain due to surgery, injury or other chronic illness. The non-narcotic types of painkillers are used to minify moderate pain. But there are also another type of medications which are a conjugation of narcotic and non-narcotic painkillers such as Codeine, Oxycontin, Vicodin, Darvocet, Fetanyl, and Demerol. These extreme kinds of painkillers are used to tranquilize typical neuropathic pain, which the traditional analgesics can not relieve.

The beginning of painkiller use may seem to be innocent but gradually the patient’s body and mind become dependent on it. Once you have started taking those opiate painkillers for legitimate pain, over time, you develop a tolerance from which addiction comes into being. The users of analgesics develop some common symptoms. They originate an uncontrollable desire of using pain-relieving medication on a regular basis which leads to an increased tolerance to the drug. To conquer the situation, the user takes higher doses of painkillers to achieve the desired euphoric feeling. They like to keep secret the incident of using analgesics. The most irritating indications of employing opiate painkillers are loss of appetite, weight loss, nausea, headache, increased sensitivity to sounds and lights, rapid speech, red eyes, runny nose, forgetfulness and mood swings. Those symptoms are problematic enough for the family members and others giving rise to various personal and social problems.

National Institute on Drug Abuse conducted a survey in 2005 and showed that there was a 40 percent hike in Oxycontin use among teens. Painkiller use among teenagers is turning to be a common scenario. They avail it easily because many households keep the prescription as well as non-prescription analgesics. Using it continually, they become dependent on those drugs. Its abuse, thus leads to physical damage such as lung problems, gastrointestinal problems, malnutrition, etc. almost everyone experiences occasional insomnia and may become depressed which not only puts the user’s lives at risk, but also endangers other’s lives.

About 2.2 million people are reported to take painkillers. The signs of the abuse may sometimes be unrecognized and then many problems spring up from it. The addicts need physical as well as psychological treatment to get rid of this addiction. At the secession period, one may suffer from the withdrawal symptoms which are severe. The treatment depends upon the type of analgesics in use, its duration and frequency of intake. Relapse or getting back to the previous painkiller addiction may take place if the treatment is exercised at home. So, it is important to seek help of the doctors. Now, many drug rehab centers are out for this typical treatment.
