Placing Customers On Hold: How to Customize Your Phone System.

By: Tymon Hytem

We have all been there, waiting on the phone line for a real human being to answer the call. Sometimes all you get is dead air and you wonder if you are actually still connected to the call. Sometimes you get music and sometimes you hear someone talking to you. No matter what, the consumer is actually listening while they are waiting for someone. On hold messaging is a great tool to customize your phone system to your cliental. Messaging on hold is a wonderfully effective marketing tool. While you have people on hold waiting, you can give them a quick commercial to tell them what your business is all about. Studies that have been done by the major telecommunication companies show that 20 percent of all callers that are placed on hold will actually purchase the product or service that is being sold based on what they heard while they were waiting.
Think about it. In the business world today, most businesses have phone systems that send you through a series of menus. Even while you are waiting to reach that human voice, you will be put on hold at some point. It is estimated that approximately 70% of all people who call businesses throughout the day are put on hold. If those people, about 60 percent will hand up. In a study done by the North American Telecommunications Association, it showed the following results:
People on hold with nothing but silence will abandon the call in less than one minute. An estimated 90 percent of these callers hang up the phone within 40 seconds of being placed on hold.
When there is music on the line, people who are placed on hold will stay on the line for about 30 to 60 seconds longer than those who are on with silence.
When the caller has some information to listen to, they are more likely to stay on the phone. Studies show that they will last up to 3 minutes longer than when there is music.
So based on this information, would it not be a better marketing tool to make sure that your on hold messages work for your company to draw in the consumer. It is a good investment in your business to look into On Hold Messaging systems as it not only will make you look like you know your stuff, but it has been proven to bring in and keep potential customers waiting for that human voice.
