Protein Powder - When & How To Take It

By: Graeme Olsen

You just bought a huge tub of protein powder but you're really not sure when and how to take it. The directions on the label say to use one or two scoops in liquid. That doesn't tell you very much. You just know that you want to get stronger, build muscle, get toned, or whatever you're trying to accomplish by buying the protein powder in the first place. Protein powder is a great way to get extra protein that you just can't get from food. Most people just can't eat all the food that would be required to get your daily allotment of protein. That's why protein powder is great for getting what you need. But protein powder is not cheap. There's no wrong way to use it, but you'll want to use it at all the right times so you get the best results.

Protein powder is nothing more than a meal supplement. When you drop a scoop in your water or milk and down it, it's just like you just ate a serving of steak or chicken; it's just protein in powder form. That's it. They say to get your metabolism really raging, you should eat six meals per day; and each meal should include a proteins source. That's a lot of eggs, fish, chicken and beef. Protein powder allows you to get your protein without eating so much food.

Before and After Your Workout - The best times to use protein powder is right before and right after your workout. Your muscles are working during your workout, and the protein will give it the fuel it needs to get you through. Then, after your workout, your muscles need replenishing; and a protein shake is perfect for that.

How to Use It - There's no wrong way to use protein powder. You can drink it in water, milk, or even juice. Cook some oatmeal in the microwave, pour some protein powder on top, add a tablespoon of peanut butter and a banana and you have a power meal. You can even sprinkle protein powder on your food. It all depends on what you like. Just make sure you get a protein powder you like. That way you're guaranteed to use it and get the results you're after.

Before Bed - Another great time to use protein powder is right before bed. When you sleep, you go six to eight hours without eating. Your body starts to eat away at your hard earned muscle if it has no fuel to feed off of. That's why protein powder in water is a great nightly snack that will get you through the night until you can get your eggs in the morning.
