Secrets for Improved Balance for Seniors

By: MauiNick

Reportedly, according to The Centers For Disease Control, fall-related death rates for men and women 65 years and older climbed dramatically from 1993 to 2003. Dr. Judy Stevens, a doctor and epidemiologist who prepared the paper for the Centers for Disease Control on fatal falls versus injuries resulting from falls says that, “Fall death rates have increased faster than fall injury rates. In large part, this is because people are living longer and many of our seniors now are older and frailer. They need our help to prevent potentially fatal fall injuries”.

Acknowledging this is imperative, not only for your health, but for your life, as well, to improve your balance. To improve your balance will take energy on your part, some time, and specific exercises, but you can do it.

Setting a limit on your activities because you are scared you will fall and injure yourself won't help you improve your balance.

Perfecting your balance will, in turn, be of assistance for you to enhance your mobility as well, because it requires exercises. You will also feel more at ease with the activities you enjoy and will not feel the need to diminish your activities only because you are fearful you will fall and hurt yourself.

You can adjust this yourself and you can begin today.

The top routine to pick up your balance is by taking a walk. Yes, that’s it! If you do not get out and walk on a daily basis, inaugurate doing so, even if it is only a a very short walk – as long as you are walking. You should regard this a preparation for your legs to help improve your balance. You'll need to take some steps in order to make this transpire for you.

Expand your stride by increasing it and enhance your walking tempo by testing it and you will soon be feeling better and, even more important, more balanced!

Perfecting your balance can also improve your posture and your well being. It can do a lot for your health, including reducing the risk for accidental injuries and falls. There are specific exercises that you can execute to enhance your balance. It can even enhance your mobility.

Grow your stride by taking larger steps. Get underway small by just seeing how long your stride is and then try to enhance on that by taking larger, longer steps. This will improve the muscles and ligaments in your legs, as well as your joints realize better balance and expanded strength. Building up the tempo of your steps is also key.

If you go for a walk on a daily basis, start timing yourself to see how much time it takes you to walk one mile (or whatever your normal distance is). Time yourself on a daily basis for one week and then

tally up the results. Plan to make some challenges for yourself in the next week by improving the time it takes you to walk around the block. If it takes you on the order of thirty minutes to walk a mile, make a goal for the next week to walk that kilometer in something like twenty five minutes and so on.

Keep testing yourself gradually and you will see that you can enhance the tempo and length of your steps.
