Should You Purchase A Security Camera?

By: Shane Nicholson

What is the most valuable of all your material possessions? For many people it is their home. And homes don't come cheap. You will spend tens of thousands of dollars - perhaps more - in buying your home. But, have you taken the time to protect your home with a good-quality security camera?

What are your options when it comes to buying a home security system? Well, for starters you can choose a video surveillance security system. These make use of cameras directly connected to a display monitor. With this type of system, you can monitor every critical area of your home, including bedrooms, garage area and entranceways.

Another option for you might be a wireless security camera system. You can purchase wireless cameras for use either outdoors or indoors. With a wireless camera you do not have to worry about installing power or transmission cables between the security camera and console unit. The signals from a wireless security camera are transmitted wirelessly, and picked up by a receiving unit on the other end.

A third option - and this one is really high-tech - is the infrared security camera. As you may know, infrared light cannot be detected by humans, but special purpose cameras can capture images using this type of light.

This means that infrared security cameras can be used where there is no other forms of light - in other words, when (to our eyes) a room is in total darkness! Now you can monitor a dark room (perhaps a basement or attic) or hallway effectively.

But, what if money is limited? Are there cheap home security cameras available - models that are inexpensive and yet are of decent quality? Yes, there are - in fact you can find some models for under $30 dollars. But if you really want to save some money, you can purchase dummy (fake) security cameras. They look and function just like the real ones - except that they do not capture images, or record events. They are just a public deterrent when they are prominently displayed.

One of the more recent developments in home security is the type of system that will allow you to view the images displayed by your installed security cameras on your personal computer. These setups require the use of proprietary security camera software. Once installed, you can look at images of your home in Maine while on winter vacation in Miami Beach!

So, the verdict is in: there are many choices awaiting you when it comes to purchasing security cameras for home use. Let me ask you this final question: Given the wide selection that is available, the great quality, the low cost -- what is keeping you from buying one? Why not make the investment in your own peace-of-mind today?
