Small pill, great hearing wonders

By: John Good

With the aid of lab animals, scientists have been, for years now, trying to determine if a pill that lessens the damaging effects of noise to the hearing can be developed. Coming in now are the trusty Marines. Starting in a few months, a group of 600 Marines at Camp Pendleton in California will face rifle training with not only foam plugs in their ears, but also a drink that tastes very much like wild berry herbal tea.

They shall be drinking this along with taking their meals during the time that they get into the noisy training period that they have to focus on for two weeks, and this is one experience that is sure the erode 10 percent of the hearing ability of the participants. If all turns out as planned, hearing examinations might prove that a substance within the drink altered some things. This certainly is the newest bump in the road of finding the medical solution that will both cure and prevent hearing loss caused by loud noise. Experts share that such an effort has been collecting steam in the past years even as it is not new at all.

Hearing loss that is noise induced comes in as the second most self reported occupational illness or injury and it comes in first as the most common occupational disease, states the federal government. It has been found that people who either enter prolonged exposure to noisy surroundings or get caught in a sudden burst suffer from permanent hearing loss and to date, 10 million Americans have been affected. It has been estimated that 30 million people today are working in places that have dangerous levels of noise like a mining, construction, manufacturing or agricultural site.

Persons like professional musicians should also take care. It was not too long ago, during a big band style performance, a man forgot to put on ear protection so when the trumpet behind him began to play, he found himself ducking and putting his hands over his ears. There is also a lot of risks in past times and sports like snowmobiling, motorcycling or recreational shooting.

While earplugs and special sound deadening earmuffs can be used, trust that these won't be enough. There are forms of sound that easily overwhelms them. Most would not bother to wear these even if they should, and others on the other hand are just susceptible to damage in their hearing capability. Plus, some levels of sound can destroy hearing by reaching the skull even if there is some sort of protection in the ears.

Honestly, it is not loud noise that brings in brute force alone that destroys the cochlea no matter how delicate it really is. For in some cases, it simply makes the inner ear produce oxygen molecules that pose serious health threats and these are known as free radicals. The ear protects itself naturally and antioxidants can neutralize free radicals and other substances. However, the ear's antioxidants get disturbed with enough noise.

In this scene, free radicals create damage that leads to the demise of the receptors of sound found inside the ear. It indeed makes sense to fortify the natural defense of the ear through its antioxidant defenses as a preventive measure, then use it to correct immediately anything wrong that may take place after the exposure to noise. The subject of animal experiments in prevention has become truly promising and many people are excited about applying this to security from noise exposure for human beings.

In the field of antioxidants for hearing, one of the pioneers assert that he has truly seen its effect in many different people. For the health supplement that he prescribes to hundreds and hundreds of clients that ask him for a cure on hearing loss primarily thanks to prolonged exposure to noise or aging, he made sure to secure it with a patent. Many of these patients saw the wondrous improvement when it came to their hearing and also felt the progression of their hearing loss getting slower. For most with a moderate to severe hearing loss, that hasn't been enough to let them throw away their hearing aids, but its often enough to let theirs down or switch to a smaller and less powerful mode.

Those involved in the study including the one who spearheaded the study with the Marines, have all obtained motivating feedback from the work they have done on antioxidant compounds used on lab animals. NAC or N acetylcysteine is where he has set his eye on, and it is the same substance that is approved by the federal authorities to reverse the damaging effects of a famous painkiller. With the NAC working to neutralize the ear's free radicals, the ear's antioxidant defenses are made better. Giving NAC prior to and after exposure to noise significantly reduced hearing loss and this was what he established through his animal work. The relevance for humans is just about whether you need a hearing aid or not after seeing the effect.
