Stay Connected With Friends and Family

By: Tom Haye

Social Networking is a term used to describe a fairly recent breed of Web sites, also referred to as online communities. It seems that social networking will be a common part of our lives. As social networking is all about people, it is something that interests everyone.

So what exactly is social networking? Social networking is the process of connecting people together based on their social bonds or ties. A very well known social networking site is the hugely popular MySpace. Although the field of social networking is a broad one, it basically consists of two areas: socializing with friends and professional networking. The whole point of social networking is to create a network of friends. It is about meeting those that have like interests and being free to express yourself. The power of social networking is unstoppable.

Joining a social networking site enables you to gain introductions to many people who you would not otherwise be able to gain access to. Social features provided by most community sites are blogging, email, groups, classifieds and forums. The best thing is the ability to share photos, create blogs, join groups and make new friends all in one place. Sharing photos, hosting or finding events, getting news and joining new conversations are the some of the great ways people are using these sites. And you thought social networking was all about text-messaging among bored teenagers. Many of these networks offer the option to design your own web page, where people can get to know you, what you do, and how your knowledge and experience might help them.

If you haven’t joined a social networking site yet, I highly recommend that you try one today. The new friendships that you can make online will enrich your life. Most networking communities are free but they do require that you go through a registration process. To start finding new friends, you must create a profile first and tell others a little about yourself. This is because, internet users are looking to communicate with someone who has the same interests. Just remember that although social networking websites are a great place to meet other internet users, they can also be dangerous. One way to protect yourself, is to only use your first name in your profile. In your profile if you are required to list the city and the state that you live in, you may want to think about using a nearby city or town, especially if you live in a small town. As well as the above precautionary measures, it is better if you do not post detailed information on your children, the location of your home, your income or when you will be gone for awhile.
