The 9 Best Morning Stretching Exercises To Get That Sleepy Body Moving

By: Nick Gunnarson

Doing morning stretching exercises is the perfect way to wake up and fire your whole body up for the day ahead.

Doing morning stretching exercises increases blood flow to your muscles, helps your digestive, circulatory, respiration and nervous systems. Better yet a good regular stretching routine will reduce stress and help you lose weight if done as part of an eating and work out plan.

So all in all doing morning stretches is a very positive way to begin each day!

The list below is hardly exhaustive but I hope it gives you some ideas. Also of course you may have certain areas of your body that you feel need warming up more than others, for me for example it's my legs, I do a lot of aerobics and body pump in the weekday evenings so often feel a bit stiff first thing. In the past I've also had some Achilles and groin strain problems so I like to do stretches for those areas so that I never get those nasty problems again so for me I also add some good leg and calf stretching.

Morning Stretch 1

An excellent general easy leg stretch and my favourite as it will do several parts of the leg at once.

1) Kneel with 1 foot on the floor and set your weight over the knee.
2) Using your heel on the ground lean forwards.
3) This stretch can put a fair bit of stress on your Achilles so lean in to it bit by bit.

4) Keep in the stretch for at least twenty seconds, then repeat with your opposite leg.

If you want, you'll find you can put some pressure to the thigh area and so get some groin stretching going too. Never push to hard, it is meant to be a morning stretch, loosen up or down or rehab exercise rather than a dancers flexibility exercise. I think it is to be quite relaxing and comfortable.

Morning Stretch two

1) Sit on the side of your bed with your feet on the floor.
2) Bend over, reaching both hands toward the feet.
3) Arch your back.
4) Hold for a count of 10.

1) Stay seated to the edge of your bed using your feet on the floor.
