The Case of Unwanted Hair

By: Jeffy Kimmel

Something that sounds like a child's riddle is what you have here. Can we handle being thick and bountiful on one part of our bodies but invisible on another? Will it be possible for us to spend billions both to encourage and discourage? Hair is something that is disgusting just about any place else but beautiful on our heads. For one professor of psychology at a Pennsylvania college, it is something very complicated. An answer like you're supposed to is probably the most common response you will get when you ask people why they shave.

When it comes to questioning all the standards of attractiveness except for body hair, this is a given and this is still true in the 1990s. Because new, high technology methods of getting rid of unwanted hair are entering the medical marketplace, this may be truer than ever. It was April 1995 when the first laser hair removal system was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration and during this time the hair removal market has been in a state of agitation.

The arguments between purveyors of different ways to get rid of hair like electrolysis vs.lasers or lasers vs.different kinds of lasers played out through Web sites and advertisements. At stake are the dollars Americans spend to dispatch with hair they deem undesirable, variously estimated from $2 billion to $5 billion a year. When it comes to women, they use lasers to get rid of their facial hair and bikini lines while men resort to lasers to help them with their simian backs. Lasers are patronized by people who hate their nubby armpits, regret their hair transplants, or those who want smooth bodies to cut down on wind resistance during sports because they are convenient and they save time.

When it comes to a substantial group of transsexuals in Northern California, they want to achieve various degrees of hairlessness. For medicine, it is becoming ever more market driven and so laser hair removal has been a way for dermatologists, cosmetic surgeons, and even spa owners to reach this eager clientele. The doctors finding themselves fielding questions from patients who've read about laser hair removal and want to know if it's worth it are those who have worked with other lasers for nearly 20 years.

There was a doctor who decided to invest in a laser system after much thought. You can avail of treatments from him. Since the entire industry is gearing up for this like you can't believe, he said that this must really be a huge market. Taking laser hair removal into consideration, it causes less pain and takes less time than electrolysis, which kills individual hair follicles with an electric current delivered by a very fine needle. Those who said that their treatment isn't as painful as its reputation holds and that theirs is the only permanent form of hair removal were the proponents of electrolysis. The principle behind them is the same but different hair removal lasers work differently. Considering the first laser to be approved, manufactured, and heavily marketed, the skin should be waxed and the excess wiped away. Heating the carbon left in the hair follicles damaging them in the process is the laser as it passes through the skin but the skin is not harmed.

Long pulse ruby or alexandrite lasers that don't require waxing or a carbon based lotion are used by other hair removal systems. It is the light of the laser that is aimed at the skin passing through it until it strikes pigment in brown or black hair. Causing injury to the hair follicle, the light turns into heat. In the skin, you will find melanin and this is why there are times when lasers will not be effective for very light skin where there is not enough melanin to start the process and for dark skin which may undergo pigmentation changes.
