Total Guide To Understanding Yeast Infections

By: Sarah Rhodes

The most common symptoms are itching and the feeling of irritation in the vaginal area; redness or swelling of the vulva; a white, thick, unpleasant discharge which looks similar to cottage cheese and which has no scent, although sometimes it could smell like yeast; the feeling of burning whenever urinating or having sex.

Candida is quickly becoming one of the most controversial health topics of our time. Most conventional doctors dont believe the ailment even exists since there are such a myriad of symptoms associated with the disease, but those that do believe tend to do so passionately. There has never been any sort of ironclad study done on the ability for a woman who suffers from Candida to conceive, the much more common yeast infection form of Candida is thought to interfere in a womans body chemistry enough as to stop any possible conception.

Twenty symptoms of Candidiasis are: 1. Headaches 2. Cystitis (infected bladder) 3. Mood swings 4. Vaginitis (inflammation of vagina or thrush) 5. Fungal infections (e.g. athletes foot) 6. Bad breath 7. Extensive food allergies 8. Anal itching 9. Feeling ill after eating yeast or sugary foods 10. Nasal itch or congestion 11. Craving for sugary things 12. Abdominal distension or bloating 13. Diarrhoea, constipation or both 14. Depression 15. Fatigue 16. Poor memory 17. Lack of sexual desire 18. Craving for bread or alcohol 19. Menstrual cramp or pain 20. Muscle aches.

Most doctors say that we should drink at least eight 8-oz. glasses of water daily, but many people need even more than that. I have found that simply drinking enough water greatly reduces my likelihood for getting a yeast infection. Because I am drinking more water, and subsequently urinating more frequently, my body is able to flush out the sugars that feed the yeast.

The common culprit here is Candida albicans. Yeast is present in everyone and lives in harmony along with many other microorganisms in the gastrointestinal tract. However, when there's candida overgrowth, it may cause problems such as oral thrush (white coating under the tongue), bloating, indigestion, lethargy, rectal itching, yeast infection of the skin and frequent bladder infections.

When Candida albicans thrives on the tongue, it could just be an annoying local overgrowth. The official name for this is oral "thrush." But bear in mind that a very furry tongue might indicate that Candida is also present in large numbers in the digestive tract, hidden from view, and could have spread beyond the borders of the intestines.

An untreated yeast infection will allow for the symptomatic pains of this infection to continue and possibly worsen in their severity. However, it is important to note that many untreated yeast infections progress normally and the body wonderfully clears up the condition on its own. This is generally accomplished during the menstrual cycle. When menstruating the flow of blood raises the pH level within the vagina. This action minimizes the activity of the yeast cells because of their inability to grow in that pH environment.
