Treatment of Urinary Tract Infections or Urinary Stones

By: dr. sarkozy mikal

Hard mineral masses lodged anywhere in the urinary tract. The urinary tract consists of organs which filter blood to remove liquid waste (urine) which is then excreted
.
The stones usually form in the kidneys first and then travel to other parts of the urinary tract where they may become stuck in smaller tubes e.g. bladder pebbles, ureteric stones and kidney stones. The condition is often extremely painful.

Every year, about 1 of 1,000 adults in the combined States is hospitalized because of stones in the urinary tract. Stones are more general in middle-aged and older adults and in men. Stones vary in size from too small to be seen with the naked eye to 1 inch (2.5 centimeters) or more in diameter.

Causes of Urinary Stones

Stones may form because the urine becomes too saturated with salts that can form stones or because the urine lacks the normal inhibitors of stone formation.

Citrate is such an inhibitor, because it usually binds with the calcium that is often concerned in forming stones. About 80% of the stones are composed of calcium, and the remainders are composed of various substances, including uric acid, cystine, and struvite.

Stones are more general in people with certain disorder (for example, hyperparathyroidism and short bowel syndrome) and in community whose diet is very tall in protein or vitamin C or who do not devour enough water or calcium.

Some Urinary tract stones grow as large as a grapefruit, with some growing as small as a grain of sand. Two terms are used in differentiating the type of stone condition.
