Types of Garden Décor

By: Azlan

For many people, the garden is an extension of the home; a place to doll up and refurbish with decorations, similarly like their home’s interiors. Much of the beauty comes from the garden layout, the plants and flowers, the trees, the terraces, and the lawns. Such beauty can be brought to life by the birds and butterflies that visit the garden. It can also be further enhanced by the choice and use of garden décor.

There are many types of garden decor that you can consider when designing or improving your garden. Although “décor” itself is a traditional term used to describe the decorations and furnishings of an interior area, incorporating everything from the furniture to the paint on the wall, I don’t see why a garden cannot be treated in much the same way. In this article, we will consider garden décor to signify the decorations that are included or added to the garden, both for functional and aesthetic purposes.

Statues – With a long historical background, statues have stood the test of time as a popular decor item. There are classical statues that are created for adorning stately homes, mansions, public sites, memorials, etc. But there has also been a special niche for smaller statues that are used to beautify smaller, more modern gardens. These come in many styles and designs, some of them following ancient and classical traditions. Other popular designs include cats, dogs, lions, frogs, and other domestic or wild animals.

Waterfalls and Fountains – Experienced landscape artists know that the use of water in a garden with no natural water feature can greatly enhance it. People just like and appreciate the look and sound of flowing water, which is also a big help if you want to relax. In fact, I know I am not the only person in the world who finds it relaxing sitting or strolling by water. You can add some artificial waterfalls and fountains to your garden to improve its overall look and feel. These can be incorporated into a water garden or just added as stand-alone elements.

Planters – The containers or planters used for some of your plants can be important decorative pieces in any garden, especially those with patios, terraces or little visible soil. Some people even consider planter gardening as a specific type of gardening in itself. There are many helpful books on the subject if you want to know what types of plants are best grown in planters. You will find a wide range of designs, made from a choice of materials. There are attractive containers in concrete, fiberstone, fibreglass and plastic.

Other Items – Don’t let yourself be limited to what I have mentioned here. There is no end to the possibilities of what you can use to decorate the garden. When special holidays come around, you can add ornaments and other items to create a relevant theme. Then there are other types of decor that may be multi-purpose, with a functional or decorative use, like garden lighting or bird houses.

Allow your imagination some leeway as you design your garden, and observe from visiting public gardens, read magazines, and browse the Internet. Chances are, you can come up with a unique mixture of garden décor that will be the envy of your friends and neighbors.
