Using Discount Fabrics in Home Decorations

By:

When you’re on a tight budget but want to redecorate your home, you can still do so when you make the right choices. You can afford to decorate if you use discount drapery fabrics. Not only that, but these rich fabrics can be put to other uses as well. Since drapery fabrics are usually quite heavy, they can be used for slipcovers, throw pillows, and duvet covers, to name a few. There are indeed lots of creative ways to use discount fabric.

You can create pretty decorative pieces even without sewing. Folding the fabric in an accordion and then draping and feeding it through pretty sconces or rings on the wall will create a beautiful jabot curtain. When you have a curtain with a droopy center, you can just tack the middle to the wall. You can also use adhesive strips to create beautiful décor without sewing. It can be ironed onto the back of the fabric you’re using, so that it will hold two pieces together or even stick the fabric itself to the wall or another surface. You have to make sure whether or not the the strips are washable. If you are using a non-washable fabric it may not matter, but if you want to be able to wash your curtains, it will.

If you prefer sewing, then you have lots more of great options. Even from a novice sewer to an expert seamstress, there is a kind of sewing that can make use of discount drapery fabrics. Beginner sewers should use solid fabrics, or ones with a very simple, small design; using stripes and plaids are difficult to match pieces properly. You want to have a professional look and feel to your work, not just home-made. To get the look of a pattern without really having one, you can use tone-on-tone material, where the same colors are used in both the pattern and the background. This kind of pattern has more allowances for mistakes.

You can also make pillows and table runners with your discount fabrics. The heaviness of these fabrics makes it perfect for these types of projects, not just draperies. You can use a foam pillow and put a drapery fabric slip over it and have a beautiful sham for the bed. If you want, you can put zippers for easier removal and cleaning. And speaking about cleaning, you can easily spot-clean these kinds of fabrics, so you don’t have to go to the cleaners.

Table runners are an easy project for a beginner sewer using drapery fabric. Sew a backing of plain material and put a fringe or beading on the ends and you have a lovely decorative addition to your home. Save money on bedspreads and bedroom décor by making duvet covers. If you use the same fabric, you can also make pillows and curtains to match. This is really an affordable technique that also allows you lots of leeway in decorating. You can find coordinating discount drapery fabrics to allow you to mix and match in your decorating scheme.
