Want to Save Hundereds of Dollars On Gas? How to save money on Gas

By: Tymon Hytem

In this day and age with the rising cost of gas prices, everyone is looking for ways to save on this cost. The average person drives about 30 miles a day or more and this can become quite costly at the gas pumps. There are many things that can be done to help decrease the cost of gas by ensuring that your vehicle gets better gas mileage.
First and foremost, you should make sure that your car is up to date on its maintenance. Just by making sure to get regular oil changes and replacing air filters regularly, not only will you extend the life of your car, but it will drive better and increase the mileage that you get with driving. Make sure to use the recommended oil grade for your vehicle as this will also help to increase your gas mileage. Another easy way to increase your mileage is by making sure to fix any serious problems right away. If you are driving around in a car where something is faulty, but not detrimental to the operation of your car, say a faulty oxygen sensor, then you are just wasting your gas.
Removing excess weight from your vehicle will also make a big difference in your gas mileage. Check out your trunk space. You will be amazed by what you keep in there. If you really don’t need it, take it out. You definitely do not want to use your car as a storage bin. If you travel a lot, consider making sure to pack lightly and cut down on what you take with you. Try not to weight down your vehicle as this will decrease your gas mileage to a degree.
If you are looking to save big money in gas prices then look no further than a mirror. You are the biggest way to save money when it comes to driving. When driving, you want to avoid high speeds as much as you can. If you don’t drive like a crazy person, you can save quite a lot in gas mileage. If you keep your speed steady and at the posted speed limit, you will increase the mileage by a good 30 to 40 percent. Yeah, I know it drives you nuts to have some yahoo pass you by, but think of all the money that you will save. Just remember to stay in the slower lane because if the posted speed limit is 65 then the chances are that everyone around you is doing about 80. Also, if you are driving on the highway or on a relatively flat road and you have cruise control, consider using it. This will not only prevent you from having a lead foot, but it will also keep your speed controlled. This in turn will save you big bucks on your gas mileage and you will not have to visit the pump often if you do a lot of traveling.
Some other ideas to help curb the cost of gas would be to be very selective in where you purchase your gas. If the place down the street is 5 cents cheaper, then by all means, wait until you get down the street. You can also check out the world wide internet to see where the cheaper gas prices are in your area. My suggestion however is don’t drive too far out of your way; otherwise you would have just spent your savings to get to the cheaper gas station. Also while at the pump, consider using the lower octane gas. I know you feel that you get better driving with the higher stuff, but really, you should use what the vehicle manufacture suggests and most suggest regular unleaded. You should also avoid long idling. If you are just running in to pick something up, make sure to turn off your car. You are just wasting gas by letting your car run as it takes more fuel to idle then it does to restart your car. Of course, if it is 10 degrees below zero and you are leaving your family to wait for you, by all means, leave the car on.
There are other options that you have to help save money on gas. One is to get rid of your gas guzzler and purchase a fuel efficient vehicle. There are a lot of new models out in the market today that will definitely help you to save money at the pumps as well as help save the environment. The second option is to check into gas clubs. These are clubs started at gas stations which will give members discounts on gas prices. You can join them at grocery stores and even at the big wholesale clubs. When you make purchases in their store, they give you a discount on gas depending on how much you have spent in their store. We all need groceries, so why not take advantage of this offer.
Regardless of what you drive and how far you have to go, there are ways to save money on gas. Remember to keep your car in good condition by getting regular tune ups and oil changes. Above all, watch how you drive. You alone will make the biggest savings in gas costs by avoiding fast speeds and aggressive driving.
