Ways to Prevent Heart Disease

By: Tara Smith

Low density lipoproteins, commonly know as "bad" LDL, can penetrate and gather against the inner walls of our arteries, under certain conditions, forming fatty streaks and plaque. Due to the busy lifestyles of two income households, the demand for quick and easy microwaveable food, fast food and snack foods have increased drastically. Also, many children are substituting soda and vending machine snacks for school lunches.

Cholesterol is a type of a lipid, a soft, fat-like substance that serves as a source of fuel. Excessive cholesterol can cause build-up of atherosclerotic plaque. Accumulation of plaque in arteries can block blood flow and lead to a heart attack. In comparison to HDL, which has been privileged with the name 'good' cholesterol, LDL and VLDL are relatively large cholesterol molecules; in fact, they are the richest in cholesterol.

The difficulty many people have in understanding the risk of a high fat diet is not so much in the total fat but in the types of fat included in the diet. Obesity is an increasing problem these days, it is well documented that overweight people are more likely to suffer heart problems. In the hustle-bustle of modern living, it is easy to resort to a junk diet.

On the one hand there are two types of fats - one of which is good, one of which is bad. It is recognized that approximately 95 percent of the population is deficient in essential fatty acids. Decreasing certain fats is still a good rule of thumb. These fats are saturated fats which are found in animal products, coconut and palm kernel oil. So sticking with lean meats such as poultry and fish, and choosing low fat dairy products is still a good choice.

Hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis), which is frequently involved in heart disease, can also affect the arteries that supply blood to the penis, thereby reducing the blood supply to it and leading to erectile dysfunction. Smoking makes this worse, and quitting smoking should always be a priority. Heart disease is a silent killer that gives little or no warning just as Cancer.

Smoking contains nicotine which fills laziness in us and makes us addicted to cigarette. You can start with slow walking, deep breathing as well as cycling. Gradually you will get into habit of a proper exercising schedule. Even smoking just one cigarette per day can double the risk of a hear attack.

Reduce the amount of red meat in your diet. Red meat is high in artery-clogging saturated fat. It is best to stick to a red meat free diet which includes healthier protein options like chicken, fish, egg whites, tofu and beans. Cholesterol can turn bad in your blood if you have a very poor diet and this causes the formation of plaques in the walls of the blood vessels leading to heart problems and bypass surgery in some cases. Its the build up of LDL cholesterol as mentioned above.

You hear many terms like coronary heart disease , atherosclerosis or some other term and are left wondering as to what exactly all these terms mean. Medical information could confuse you. Triglyceride is simpler when mentioned as fat in your body. It is essential that you read and stay informed on some basic terminology. You could watch a few programs related to the heart and its working before going to your doctor.

The power that each individual has to ensure their own heart health is amazing, when you consider the factors that play a role in the variety of diseases that target the heart. The fact, then, that one out of every twenty people under the age of 40 suffers from some form of heart disease indicates that too many people aren't taking their heart health seriously.
