What Exactly Are The Causes Of Bad Breath?

By: Gabriel Adams

Everyone has known or worked with someone that loves to drink coffee in the morning and then practically sit in your lap while they are talking to you. If you do not have someone with bad breath, then you are around someone that is constantly smoking, and has terrible smoker’s breath. Eating or drinking certain things and smoking can cause you to have bad breath, but this type of bad breath is usually easily remedied. The type of bad breath that I am going to focus on is chronic bad breath. Some of the causes of this type of bad breath are dry mouth, poor oral hygiene, and sinus conditions.

A dry mouth can be a major cause of bad breath because saliva is a natural cleansing agent that is produced by your body. With a lack of saliva plaque has a much better chance of collecting on your teeth. Bacteria which are usually the cause of bad breath then have the chance of feeding on the plaque. It is a good idea to drink plenty of water throughout the day to cleanse your teeth and your breath. Also be aware that when you take certain medications they can dry out your mouth, so you need to drink plenty of water when taking those types of medications.

Poor oral hygiene is another cause of bad breath because plaque and tartar are breeding grounds for the types of bacteria that cause bad breath. The best way to combat the buildup of plaque and tartar is to brush and floss twice daily every day. If you do start getting tartar built up on your teeth, then you need to get your teeth professionally cleaned by a dentist to remove the tartar.

Sinus conditions can also cause bad breath, because the extra mucus that is caused by the sinus infection can collect on your tongue. The mucus carries its own fowl smell, but it also attracts odor causing bacteria to collect as well. Both of these things will cause you to have bad breath.
