What Is Hoodia Gordonii And How Does It Work?

By: Desert Lialyn

Pronounced “Hoo-dee-ah”, hoodia is a succulent although is sometimes mistaken for a cactus. Hoodia is found in places such as the semi deserts of South Africa, Namibia and Botswana and grows in clumps of green upright stems. It takes roughly 5 years before the hoodia’s pale purple flowers appear to be harvested. Hoodia mania has swept through the nation and has even been shown on programs through ABC, 60 minutes and even the British network BBC because of its ability to suppress appetite.

Hoodia can be bought in form of liquid, capsules and even teas from health stores all over the internet.

Although it appears at first to be a relatively new discovery it seems that Bushmen of the Kalahari Desert have been using it for sustained periods of time. These Bushmen live off the land and to ward off hunger they would cut off part of the hoodia stem and eat it. There are 20 different types of hoodia but it seems that it is only hoodia gordonii that contains the natural suppressant.

There is hardly any researched published on the findings related to hoodia. It works in a way that could be seen as tricking the brain. Quite simply it fools the brain into thinking that there is enough blood sugar so it shuts down the hunger mechanism. The technical explanation is that the steroidal glycosides found in hoodia affects the nerves in the hypothalamus which monitor blood glucose. However there have been some studies on animals with hoodia which in these studies it was believed to have reduced calorie intake from between 30 to 50 percent.

There is no doubt that hoodia works and because of the publicity it has received there has been a high call in demand for it. Because of the time and temperatures it take to successfully grow hoodia it makes it scares which pushes costs up. Hoodia is not cheap and there is a lot of false information on the internet which is completely unreliable. There are internet sites and buyers guide that explain one thing or the other as to why you should choose certain products. These are usually made up by companies wanting you to buy their products. There are also a lot of scams out there so be careful! It is thought to be believed that over half the amount of hoodia sold in the US is counterfeit.

These hoodia reviews will help you find quality hoodia. One of the most popular brands of hoodia is hoodithin which is a liquid hoodia extract.
