What are Ovarian Cysts?

By: Ava Dylan

Do you know what is meant by ovarian cysts? These are small sacs filled with liquids that develop in a woman's ovaries. Even though most of the cysts are safe, some of it could become ruptured leading to internal bleeding along with extreme pain. When this happens, the doctor will usually perform surgery to remove the problematic cyst. Here are some important facts that will explain to you why ovarian cysts happen.

For what reason Ovarian Cyst Takes place
Generally, every woman has a pair of small ovaries, nearly the size of walnut, which is situated on each side of uterus and it releases egg. One of the ovaries releases an ovum, enclosed in a small sac named follicle, each month which begins the month to month menstrual period of the woman. During the ovulation period, if the egg doesn't release the egg, it gets bigger and bigger by absorbing fluid. This liquid filled sac then grows into a cyst. When the fluid continues to fill the cyst, the walls of the sack weakens and ruptures.

Ways to Detect Ovarian Cysts
Ovarian cysts become visible through the use of ultrasound. The liquid filled sacs appear as small bubbles in the screen of an ultra sound machine. Depending on the size of the cyst, the doctor will decide if it will rupture or it won't. If the cyst is larger than 5-6 centimeters, the wall surfaces of the sac won't hold the liquid inside resulting in what we call like a leak. Laparoscopy is the most recommended treatment option for a larger cyst.
