When Cosmetic Dentistry is Beneficial

By: Sara Castroo

There is fifty one percent of the population who fails to seek dental care for the fear of pain. Although eighty percent of those who do go to the dentist know why it is necessary they still do not favor getting the help. The more aesthetic or cosmetic dentistry, without drilling, becomes more popular, the sooner people's minds may change. Going nowhere but up was the popularity of these procedures thanks to the dentists who gave people a new smile on life.

Composite plastic resins, which look and feel like tooth enamel, can be painted and sculpted to fill in unsightly gaps and cover up cracks, breaks and discolorations. The process is referred to as bonding because the resin adheres directly to the tooth and usually it is applied on the front teeth. What involves drilling is a retention trench which is not needed in this case. Bonding is easy to do and is less expensive than a crown and it is also relatively painless but if work is performed close to the gums an anesthetic can be used.

Besides having a wider range of shades, newly developed composites also bond better and this makes it easier for the new restorative materials to be matched with existing teeth. Temporarily creating micropores or tiny crevices in the enamel structure during a bonding procedure is the application of a mild etching solution to the teeth. All it takes are a few seconds for the resin to bond onto teeth enamel after being hardened by an intense light. Once the last coat is applied, the resin is shaped and polished.

Even after a gap has been filled, there is no appearance of the tooth being enlarged and so cosmetic dentistry is truly a form of art. The tooth is actually wider, but by altering the angles of the teeth to affect the way the light shines into an observer's eye, it gives the impression nothing has been changed except to fill in the gap. Without traumatizing the teeth, the bonding can be removed and replaced should the technique fail. It could remineralize within 24 hours if left alone for only a small amount of enamel is removed by the etching solution.

When it comes to defective enamel, this can cause problems for people wherein the bonding fails during the first few days. It is important to consider other forms of restorative work considering how bonding is not a panacea. A crown is advised when the structural integrity of the tooth has been compromised.

With people worrying about their front teeth all the time, dentists are worried that as bonding becomes more popular the people will start to disregard their back teeth regardless of how beneficial cosmetic dentistry has been. In most situations, bonding is cheaper than crowning. However, it is not a permanent solution as is the other. The process may need to be repeated when discoloration and flaking occurs anywhere from three to five years after the resin has been applied.

People who smoke or drink a lot of coffee are especially susceptible to staining. Reducing the need for drilling, bonding on the back teeth which is at its infancy stage can be used to replace silver fillings with some degree of improvement. With a hand tool, the dentist needs to scrape off the decayed area and then apply the resin directly to a substance beneath the enamel that makes up the body of the tooth called the dentin.

Bonding is effective on back teeth as a sealant to correct pits and grooves in the enamel, defects, if left untreated might invite tooth decay. According to the Academy of General Dentistry, thirty seven percent of children today do not have cavities and more adults are retaining their own teeth. What seems practical in the beginning can become very expensive much later.
